    Abstract: A system and related method for multiple-sensitivity optical phase modulation splits an optical carrier generated by a photonic source into at least two copies and directs the copies (e.g., via optical circulators or polarization rotators) to an electro-optical (EO) phase modulator such that the phase modulator phase-modulates each optical copy according to a received radio frequency (RF) signal of interest based on characteristics distinct to each optical copy (e.g., optical path direction, signal polarization) that provide for phase modulation of each optical copy at a different sensitivity voltage. The variably modified optical copies are directed to a photonic processor for further signal processing in the optical domain.

    Abstract: A photonic image rejection radio frequency (RF) mixer and a receiver implementing the same may suppress undesired mirror image signals having frequencies at a spectral location that is mirror-symmetric, with respect to a local oscillator (LO), to that of a signal of interest. An upconverted optical beam corresponding to a captured RF beam is extracted by an optical processor. The upconverted optical beam is mixed with the LO to obtain a desired composite optical signal and an undesired composite optical signal, each providing a corresponding beat frequency optical signal at the same frequency. The desired and undesired composite optical signals are captured by multiple optical pickups with relative phase shifts in their beat frequency optical signals which are converted into corresponding electrical signals and combined to suppress the undesired signal.

    Abstract: A forward optical intensity modulation signal, generated by optical intensity-modulating a laser signal using a forward microwave phase modulation signal, is transmitted from a base to a remote station. A backward microwave phase modulation signal, in which frequency of the forward microwave phase modulation signal is changed by demodulating the forward optical intensity modulation signal, is generated, and a backward optical intensity modulation signal, generated by optical intensity-modulating the laser signal using the backward microwave phase modulation signal, is transmitted from the remote station to the base. The backward microwave phase modulation signal is extracted by photoelectric converting the backward optical intensity modulation signal, a round trip timing is extracted by demodulating the backward microwave phase modulation signal, and transmission delay is determined from a difference between the timing and the round trip timing.

    Abstract: There is presented optical interferometer apparatus for generating at least a first and a second state for each of at least two different quantum cryptographic basis sets and associated methods for operating the apparatus. First and a second interferometer arm paths and at least two interferometer output paths are provided. Each of the first and second interferometer arm paths; and the first and second optical output paths comprises a controllable phase modulator for controllably changing the phase of light propagating along the respective paths. This maybe a silicon carrier depletion phase modulator. The output from the controllable phase modulators of the first and second optical output paths are used together for defining each of the first and second states for each respective basis set. In some examples at least one of the interferometer arm paths comprises a further controllable phase modulator such as a thermo-optic phase modulator.
