When the accelerator pedal is pushed down during normal operation the throttle cable is operated through the magnetic coupling device to cause the motor vehicle to be accelerated. When the accelerator pedal (14) is erroneously pushed down in spite of the brake pedal being intended to be pushed down, the magnetic coupling device decouples and prevents the throttle valve from being operated and the motor vehicle from being accelerated.

A locking device for an assembled trailer hitch include a lock mounted within a protective metal housing. The lock is adapted to receive the legs of a U-shaped shackle. The lock is mounted for movement within the housing by mounting components connected to the lock by adhesive foam tape. One of the locking components includes a ramp making an angle generally about 30 degrees to the bottom of the housing for camming the shackle legs upwardly into operative association with the lock. At the top of the ramp upturned ears are formed which make an angle of about 30 degrees with respect to the direction of shackle movement to further cam the shackle legs into operative association with the lock.

A trailer safety device for use in conjunction with a trailer hitch is provided having a bracket assembly from which a free-swinging body assembly is suspended. The bracket assembly and body assembly are positioned in spaced relationship above the trailer hitch to prevent inadvertant or accidential opening of the trailer hitch. The free-swinging body assembly is permitted to swing freely between points of constraint defined by inhibitors such as a bracket shoulder or an inhibitor latch. In this manner, a substantial portion of the body assembly remains positioned directly above the trailer hitch to block its opening and the body assembly absorbs shocks and jolts by swinging to and fro. To open the trailer hitch, the body assembly is manually retracted to one side of its swinging arc thereby enabling the trailer hitch to open.

An automatic hitch with safety lock may be mounted on a tractor or the like and has two laterally opposed jaws and a hook member pivotally connected therebetween and provides completely automatic latching and unlatching to an upstanding pin provided on a wagon or trailer. The latch has a combination release and spring operator for remotely retracting the hook member and unlatching the pin from the hitch. A safety lock has a lock shaft which rides a shoulder on the hook member and prevents the hook member from being retracted to an open position until the lock shaft is retracted from a position adjacent the shoulder. The safety lock may be remotely operated and has a spring biasing it into the locked position. A manual lock pin may be inserted to effectively disable the automatic operation of the hitch. A mounting plate is used to attach the hitch to a tractor or other vehicle and shock absorber springs are provided between the hitch portion and the mounting plate.

A trailer hitch head or fifth wheel is disclosed including a pair of jaws which engage the kingpin of a trailer to hold the kingpin in place. The jaws are held in closed position by a locking member which is biased to the engaged position by at least one stiff spring. A linkage engages the locking member to move the locking member to open position against the bias of the stiff spring. The linkage may be manually or automatically activated. A one-way kingpin gate is located in the front portion of the fifth wheel. The linkage engages an actuator which automatically engages the one-way gate and pivots the same to open position allowing exit of the kingpin. Preferably the linkage is automatically activated by a bumper bar linkage in a tractor operated hitch, and also may be manually activated by the operator. Optionally, a manually operable handle is provided including a keeper or projection which engages a slot in the locking member in open position to hold the locking member in open position.

The protective housing is in the form of a hollow structure which can be received and held in place on a trailer coupler while the coupler is hitched to a prime mover or other device, and the housing is shaped to protect not only the coupler but its associated padlock assembly and interior parts. The protective housing may be secured in place by the same type of padlock assemblies which are conventionally used with couplers to prevent an unwanted actuation of a coupler from a hitched condition to an unhitched condition.

A ball cover is pivotally mounted on the tongue piece and is movable from an open position to a closed position covering the ball. Means are provided for locking the cover in the closed position so that the cover prevents the trailer socket member from disengaging from the ball and together with the rim prevents the ball from disengaging with the tongue piece either vertically or horizontally.
