Abstract:
A method of producing briquettes comprising cold pressing at relatively low pressures of a homogeneous mixture consisting of at least a fibrous material which acts as both a filler and a binder together with metallic particles such as iron borings or other machine shop waste. The fibrous material is preferably paper in pulp form. The composition may include cement and/or additional material in pulverant form or dust form selected from coke, coal, limestone and fluospar.
Abstract:
Self-supporting compact bodies for use in metallurgical processes are made from fine-grained materials containing metal oxides, fine-grained caking coal and optionally other non-caking materials. The non-caking components, e.g., the fine-grained materials and other non-caking materials, are highly heated and mixed with the caking coal and the resulting mixture is briquetted when the coal is in a plastic state. Tar pitch, petroleum bitumen or the like is admixed with the fine-grained caking coal before it is mixed with the highly heated non-caking components. Briquettes formed in this fashion are characterized by improved crushing and abrasive strengths and improved high temperature strength.
Abstract:
IN THE PRODUCTION OF AGGLOMERATED IRON-CONTAINING TITANIUM ORES SUITABLE FOR REDUCTION OF THE IRON CONTAINED THEREIN, WHEREIN FINELY DIVIDED ORE PARTICLES ARE WETTED, SHAPED INTO LARGE MOLDED AGGLOMERATES, DRIED AND HARDENED, THE IMPROVEMENT WHICH COMPRISES ADMIXING WITH SAID ORE PARTICLES PRIOR TO HARDENING ABOUT 0.04 TO 30% BY WEIGHT OF THE ORE OF A COMPOUND OF IRON, TITANIUM OR MIXTURES THEREOF. THE ADMIXED COMPOUNDS ARE PREFER: ERABLY OXIDES OR MATERIALS WHICH YIELD OXIDES UNDER THE AMBIENT CONDITIONS. DESIRABLY AOUT 0.005 TO 10% BY WEIGHT OF A WATER-SOLUBLE ORGANIC POLYMER IS ALSO ADDED TO FORM A BETTER BOND. THE MOLDED AGGLOMERATES OF ABOUT 1 TO 30 MM. ARE PREFERABLY HARDENED IN AN OXIDIZING ATMOSPHERE AT ABOUT 700 TO 1300*C. AND THEREAFTER OPTIONALLY WITHOUT COOLING REDUCED WITH CARBON, METHANE OR HYDROGEN AT ABOUT 700 TO 1300*C. TO CONVERT THE IRON THEREIN TO METALLIC STATE.
Abstract:
Water-soluble graft copolymers of acrylic acid and methyl cellulose, including water-soluble salts thereof, are useful as binders in the agglomeration of finely divided materials. The graft copolymers are especially useful as binders in the pelletization of minerals and ores, such as taconite.
Abstract:
A method for controlling pellet quality in iron ore production includes the steps of mixing water, binder and iron ore particles in at least one mixer to form a mixture (step (i)) and pelletizing the mixture into green pellets (step (ii)). Between step (i) and step (ii), a part of the mixture is taken in a sampling operation, formed into a test specimen and subjected to a test.
Abstract:
A binder formulation for iron ore pellets, the formulation comprising one or more silicates and a processing aid, a pellet comprising this binder formulation and a process for producing iron ore pellets comprising mixing a binder formulation as described with particulate iron ore and forming pellets.
Abstract:
Methods for the treatment of metallic particles such as heavy metal particles and objects contaminated with the metallic particles. For the treatment of objects contaminated with the metallic particles, a stabilizing composition may be applied to the object with or without a fixation agent. For the treatment of free-flowing metallic particles, an agglomeration agent may be used with or without a stabilizing agent.
