The hardfacing material may comprise a matrix of a softer material with high hardness, such as amorphous nanocomposite steel alloys, and one or more hard component materials. The hard component materials may comprise sintered tungsten carbide, monocrystalline WC, polycrystalline WC, and the additional component of spherical cast tungsten carbide. Alternatively, a matrix of softer material, hard component materials and crushed cast tungsten carbide may be used.

This invention relates to a single cone bit with offset axis and composite cones for oil and gas drilling, mining and other subterranean drilling operations. The bit consists of a head body and a cone. The cone section has a shape of composite cones. The outer circumference of the cone is composed of from back face of the cone to top of the cone an extended gage surface, an outer cone surface and a main cone surface. A plurality of cutting elements is mounted onto each cone surface. A head journal at lower end of the head body is for rotatablely connection with the cone. Between the axis of head journal and the axis of the bit, there is an offset value d along rotating direction of the cone. A gage pad is arranged on head body at a location opposite to the offset direction of the head journal. The gage pad is fitted with inserts or hardfaced with wear resistant alloy to prevent bit from whirling and prevent head body from being worn out and to ensure gage protection. Junk slots are machined along the side of head body and jet ports are arranged at lower bevel of the head body to guarantee cuttings removal and effective cleaning results. This invention improves the bit's ability to break rocks through impact for specific use in hard formations. The bit performance is obviously improved and overall drilling cost reduced.

An earth-boring bit has bit legs having hardfacing covering the majority of the outer surface. The hardfacing may have gaps at an area surrounding the ball plug and an area around a fixture dimple. The hardfacing may be multi-layer, with the layers differing in composition. Recesses may be located at the leading and trailing edges of the supporting metal so as to provide a thicker area of hardfacing at these corners. The supporting metal of the outer surface of the bit leg may also have an upper cylindrical section and a lower tapered section. The hardfacing has a constant outer diameter but will taper in thickness in the lower tapered section. The thickness of the hardfacing may also vary in a circumferential direction with a greater thickness over at least one of the corners.

A seal assembly for a shaft supporting a rotary element comprises a sealing ring having an inner radial surface in contact with a seal surface of the shaft. The sealing ring comprising a disc shaped integral radial lip normal to the inner radial surface. A disc shaped seal shield is assembled in sealing contact with a first surface of the integral disc shaped radial lip and also in sealing contact with a first radial surface of an annular seal groove. An energizer positioned in the annular seal groove is in contact with the bottom surface of the groove and a second radial surface of the groove. The energizer exerts a radial force on the outer radial surface of the sealing ring and a lateral force on the integral radial lip of the sealing ring.
