An improved vehicle exhaust handling system capable of accomodating vehicles of varying sizes while maintaining optimal exhaust capabilities is disclosed. A motor vehicle with its engine operating is positioned in a test center in a predetermined location. A chamber is located in the floor of the test center below the rearward portion of the vehicle. A plurality of hinged shutters and a grate behind the shutters are disposed over the chamber. An exhaust fan creates an airflow from the test center into the chamber and to an outside location. The shutters are individually controllable, and a mechanism is provided to close off a flow of air through the grate whenever any of the shutters is opened. Depending on the size of the vehicle and the position of its tailpipe, an individually selected shutter is opened or all the shutters are closed and the exhaust gases are directed into the grate. Portable deflectors are provided for positioning adjacent to the tailpipe of the vehicle. The deflectors further enhance the exhaust capabilities of the system.

The apparatus disclosed comprises conduits connecting the outlets of a plurality of heating zones of wood dryers to a common stack through which the emissions from all of the zones are discharged to the atmosphere. The common stack and the conduits between the common stack and the outlets of the heating zones of the dryer or dryers are insulated to maintain the temperature of the gases and vapors coming from each zone reasonably close to the temperature of the heating zone. This result is a reduction in the opacity of the emissions to ten percent or less.

A vortex-type smoke hood, in which the liner of the hood is substantially continuously curved in such manner that the vortex action is improved greatly. One result is that the supply air velocity may be increased by a major amount, without causing "bouncing" of air and fumes out of the hood. The curved wall produces the additional benefit of rendering more smooth the flow path of the inlet air.In a second embodiment, a plate shelf and/or pass-through are combined with the hood, creating a very convenient relationship and one whereby the cook remains highly comfortable.

A hood structure for exhausting fumes and/or hot gases from food cooking below the hood structure, which includes an exhaust chamber connected to a gas-moving assembly for discharging the fumes. An air supply chamber is also connected to said gas-moving assembly for replacing the discharged air with relatively fresh air. The airflow and volume are carefully controlled to assure movement of the supply air and fumes in a pattern which will not adversely affect the temperature or other characteristics of the food being cooked, but will prevent the fumes from escaping into the room or space around the hood.

The automatic weaving looms of a textile plant are individually enveloped by hoods of acoustical insulation material suspended from hoists and sealingly engaging the floor about the associated machines. Air at controlled temperature and humidity is supplied to the interior of each hood and exhausted from that interior through a system of manifold pipes having orifices in the floor under each hood, and valves in the orifices which open automatically as the hood descends into the operative position and close when the hood is lifted.
