摘要: A sundial gnomon including a first surface having a plurality of parallel first surface apertures transmissive to light and through which a plurality of sunbeams pass, and a second surface having a plurality of second surface segment apertures for regulating the passage of sunbeams passing through the plurality of first surface apertures. The plurality of second surface segment apertures are arranged in a plurality of stencil patterns, each stencil pattern including a plurality of second surface segment apertures. The plurality of second surface segment apertures are configured to cause sunbeams passing through the plurality of first surface apertures to be incident upon second surface segment apertures of only one stencil pattern at a given time. Thus, sunbeams passing through the two surfaces will display the hour of the day. Preferably, the gnomon includes a second set of surfaces having apertures therein through which sunbeams pass to respectively display portions of an hour such as 10 minute intervals.

摘要: A solar clock utilizes the sun's radiant energy to illuminate a digital display in accordance with the solar time. An opaque mask member, preferably in the form of a right circular cylinder, is provided with a series of sunlight-transmitting apertures which cooperate with a plurality of strategically positioned fiber optic arrays, operatively coupled to a light-responsive digital display, to provide an indication of the solar time. During the course of travel of the sun across the sky, the sun illuminates different fiber optic arrays through the mask. The fiber optics serve to couple the sun's energy to the digital display.

摘要: An electronic visible light sensor is employed to detect the presence or lack of sunlight. The simple, digital light/dark data from the sensor is fed to electronic circuits which control security and other devices dependent upon day and night status. These circuits are directed and controlled in turn by associated electronic circuits that gather data which measures the length of the solar night, that is, between dusk and dawn, and by deduction, the length of the day. Given that these time periods vary daily and in a regular fashion, the result will necessarily differ by a few minutes each and every day during the 365 day solar year. The resulting day/night time data is used to estimate, with say, a four to ten minute accuracy, taken against the Universal Coordinated Time System, to establish start/stop times, durations and cycles of security and other devices dependent upon the presence or lack of sunlight relative to UCT designated within the universally accepted twenty-four day. These results are fed to the security control circuitry to define control of data to security and other devices.

摘要: Sundials and solar compasses including are disclosed. Some embodiments include an omni-directional lens, which can focus a sun beam into a sharp spot with a long depth of field. By projecting the spot onto a cylindrical panel, both the day of the year and the time of the day can be read off simultaneously with very high accuracy. Because of the simultaneous displaying of time and date, no equation-of-time correction is required. If the time is known, the true north can be determined with high accuracy, and the device becomes a reliable and easy-to-use solar compass.

摘要: The disclosed methods and device 26 for time-keeping precisely calculate data relating to the center of the Milky Way galaxy. A method of time-keeping includes determining a direction of the galactic center at a desired time, and at least one of the rise time, rise azimuth, and current elevation angle of the galactic center is calculated. Determining the direction may include calculating the coordinates of the galactic center in a celestial coordinate system of a predetermined ephemeral date. These coordinates are then transformed to a celestial coordinate system of the desired time. The transforming may include accounting for the precession of the equinox, the precession of the ecliptic plane, and variation of obliquity to the ecliptic. An indicator of the rise time 28, the rise azimuth 30 and/or the current elevation angle 32 is then displayed. The rise time, the rise azimuth and the current elevation angle may be determined for a desired position on Earth.

摘要: A clock with luminous hands has a clock panel with a front clock surface and a rear surface to which a hand-driving assembly and a power inverter are mounted. The hand-driving assembly has a pin protruding through the clock panel and extending from the front clock surface. An hour hand and a minute hand both formed by single-pole CCFLs are mounted around the pin with one end. When the power inverter produces a high voltage conducting to the pin, both the hands are energized to generate light.
