In one embodiment, an apparatus (e.g., a relay node (325)) for use with a communication system includes a first antenna (330) configured to receive a first signal including a pilot training sequence from a source node (305) and a second signal including a power-based feedback signal or a signal-to-noise based feedback signal from a destination node (350). The weighting factors are selected for optimizing the signal power at a receiver and a quality indication is determined for each channel based on the selected weighting factors. The indication is used to prioritize the allocation of the channels.

From the received first and second control signals is determined a first relative weight and a second relative weight. A first message is received and a second message is received, which may be from different sources. The received first message is relayed by transmitting it after amplifying according to the first relative weight, and the received second message is relayed by transmitting it after amplifying according to the second relative weight. The relayed messages may be transmitted to different destinations, and in a full duplex mode. Further aspects include using the relative weights to load balance or set network coverage area as between the network nodes.

In the apparatus, methods and computer program products, a relay receives an input signal made up of a plurality of sub-channels. The relay de-multiplexes the sub-channels into a plurality of signal streams, and reassigns at least one of the signal streams to a new sub-channel on the output side, the new sub-channel on the output side different from the sub-channel originally containing the signal stream on the input side. In one embodiment of the invention, the wireless communications system is an OFDM system and the sub-channels correspond to OFDM sub-carriers. In another embodiment of the invention, during sub-channel reassignment input sub-channels are matched to output sub-channels sharing a pre-determined criterion.

In mobile communications systems transmission antenna diversity is used e.g. to compensate for fading caused to the signal on the radio path. It is known to make the choice of transmission antenna jointly for all subscriber connections, but it is not hereby possible to offer the optimum transmission antenna to simultaneous connections. The present invention aims at a method for implementing transmission antenna diversity on a data transmission connection, which is set up between a transmitting unit (BS), wherein there are several transmission antenna routes (ANT1, ANT2, ANT3), and a receiving unit (MS1, MS2). In the method, a broadcast signal is transmitted through all transmission antenna routes (ANT1, ANT2, ANT3) of the transmitting unit, with the aid of these signals a choice is made in the receiving unit (MS1, MS2) of the optimum transmission antenna route connected for use. According to the invention, the method is characterised in that the broadcast signal of each transmission antenna route is shaped by an individual signal shaping method which is different from the others and a transmission antenna route is connected for use based on the received antenna choice message, individually for each receiving unit.
