摘要: A drop-on-demand liquid emission device, such as for example an ink jet printer, includes a member movable through a path for driving liquid from the device, wherein the speed at which the member moves is reduced over the time period that liquid is being expelled. During that time period, a portion of the liquid flows through a passage away from the nozzle orifice. According to a feature of the present invention, a variable flow restrictor increases the resistance to flow through the passage during the time period that liquid is being expelled; thereby tending to compensate for the reduction of the liquid-expulsion force over the time period. The result is a reduction of undesirable satellite droplets following a main drop.

摘要: A drop emission device includes a chamber having a nozzle orifice through which a drop of liquid can be emitted. A deformable electrode is associated with the chamber such that movement of the electrode in a first direction increases the chamber's volume and movement of the electrode in a second direction decreases the chamber's volume to emit a drop through the nozzle orifice. A fixed electrode opposes to the deformable electrode to define a second chamber there between such that control of relative voltage differences between the deformable and the fixed electrodes selectively moves the deformable electrode in the first or second directions. The variable volume is vented to a source of dielectric material through an opening in the fixed electrode. The ratio of the cross-sectional area of the opening to the perimeter of the opening is greater than 0.5 μm, and is preferably about 5 μm.

摘要: An ink drop deflector mechanism is provided. The ink drop deflector mechanism includes an ink drop source and a path selection device operable in a first state to direct drops from the source along a first path and in a second state to direct drops from the source along a second path. The first and second paths diverge from the source. The mechanism also includes a system which applies force to drops travelling along at least one of the first and second paths with the force being applied in a direction so as to increase the divergence of the paths. The mechanism may include a gas source which generates a gas flow force that is applied in a direction that increases the divergence of the paths. The gas flow may be positioned between the first and second paths. The gas flow may be substantially laminar and interact with at least one of the first and second paths as the gas flow loses its coherence. The mechanism may also include a catcher with at least a portion of the system being positioned adjacent the catcher. Alternatively, at least a portion of the system may be integrally formed in the catcher.

摘要: There is provided by this invention a unique printing system that utilizes a notch deflector in the ink delivery channel of a continuous ink jet printing system to control the angle of deflection ink droplets in a print and non-print direction. The width and depth of the notch in the ink delivery channel can be varied to produce different angles of deflection of the ink droplets for a given velocity of ink through the channel. Also, for any predetermined width and depth of the notch in the ink delivery channel, the deflection angle of the droplets will vary with varying velocities of ink flow. Control circuits are connected to the notch deflector to adjust the depth of the deflector for different angles of deflection.

摘要: A printer includes a printhead and a source of liquid. The printhead includes a nozzle bore. The liquid is under pressure sufficient to eject a column of the liquid through the nozzle bore. The liquid has a temperature. A thermal modulator is associated with the nozzle bore. The thermal modulator is operable to transiently lower the temperature of the liquid as the liquid is ejected through the nozzle bore. An electrical pulse source is in electrical communication with the thermal modulator. The electrical pulse source is operable to provide a series of pulses to the thermal modulator that control the transient temperature lowering of the liquid. The series of pulses includes a first pulse applied at a first power level for transferring heat to the liquid, a second pulse applied at a second power level for transferring heat to the liquid, and a third pulse applied at a third power level for transferring heat to the liquid. The third power level is in between the first power level and the second power level.
