Imaging apparatus includes a printhead with one or more nozzles, wherein heaters are positioned proximate to the nozzles. Electrical activation of the heaters creates ink droplets having a plurality of volumes. The use of higher-energy pulses in the portion of the waveform of heater activation associated with the formation of small drops results in more constant relative drop velocities and consequently, improved image quality. The printing apparatus also contains a droplet deflector having a gas source positioned at an angle with respect to the stream of droplets thereby separating ink droplets having one of the plurality of volumes from ink droplets having another of the plurality of volumes. An ink guttering structure is provided for capturing one range of ink-drop volumes, while allowing another volume range to strike an image receiver.

Methods of printing a desired color image on a printing medium by construction from individual ink drops deposited in pixel arrays includes passing a multiple-nozzle ink-discharging pen or an odd number of staggered pen cartridges across the medium multiple times, each pass creating a portion of a respective segment of the image, and periodically advancing the medium so that portions of successively different segments are created by the pen(s). During each pass, the “portion-creating” function includes discharging from the pen(s) an odd submultiple of the full density of ink desired in the segment of the desired image that is being created, so that printing full density in each segment requires an odd number of passes. The medium is advanced by an odd submultiple of the height of the segment being created in each pass and is preferably advanced after each pass of the pen(s). The portion-creating includes creation by the pen(s) of a multiplicity of spaced-apart diagonal lines. Preferably in each passing step after a first one, the diagonal lines are created in positions such as to at least partially fill in unprinted spaces between previously created diagonal lines. Preferably the diagonal lines are all at a substantially common angle (ideally forty-five degrees) to a pen-scanning direction.

Determining inkjet printer pen turn-on voltages is disclosed. An inkjet printer has a number of pens, and a number of sets of nozzles in each pen. Each set of nozzles of a pen is fired at each of a number of voltages, to obtain a voltage-value curve for each set of nozzles. A nozzle turn-on voltage for each set of nozzles is determined based on a maximum slope of its voltage-value curve. The turn-on voltage for each pen is determined based on the nozzle turn-on voltages of the voltage-value curves for its sets of nozzles.

A spraying control system for an electrically conducting liquid (3) emitted in the form of a pressurized jet (4) through at least one nozzle (2). The system contains apparatus for separating the liquid into drops, apparatus for electrically charging the drops and apparatus for applying an electrical deflection field to the charged drops. The system includes a first (8) and a second (6) monolithic element each with a continuous surface, laid out such that the continuous surfaces are facing each other and define a space (5) between them in which the pressurized jet (4) is emitted through the nozzle (2). The elements (6,8) include apparatus for continuously setting up potentials on the continuous surfaces to obtain the electrical charge of the drops and the electrical deflection field. The system also includes electronic control (31 to 36) for the potentials and apparatus for checking the intensity of electrical currents that can circulate on the continuous surfaces.

Process for modification of the position at which electrically-charged ink droplets arrive on a substrate (27), the droplets being charged by charge electrodes (20) connected to a voltage generator, the paths of the droplets being affected by the action of deviation electrodes (23, 24) that deviate the droplets depending on the value of their electrical charge, between N positions defining a frame obtained by a burst of droplets in the form of a straight segment approximately parallel to an X direction along which the substrate advances, process characterized in that an additional random voltage equal to a fraction less than 1 of the difference between the nominal voltages to be applied to the charge electrodes for each droplet and for one of the two immediately adjacent droplets in the frame, is applied in addition to a nominal voltage to be applied to each droplet charging means.

An alignment apparatus and method is provided for attaching and aligning components of an ink jet printhead of a continuous ink jet printer. First and second bonding surfaces are provided on first and second components, respectively, of the ink jet printhead. The first and second components are then aligned and attached. The attaching can be accomplished by applying an adhesive, which may also incorporate a chemical accelerator, or by distributing an adhesive from a central region of the bonding surfaces to create an adhesive bond between the first and second bonding surfaces.

An ink jet recording apparatus is constructed: a recording head for discharging ink from a plurality of discharge ports and recording onto a recording medium; a carriage on which the recording head is mounted and which reciprocatively scans on the recording medium; a recording medium conveying unit for conveying the recording medium in the direction perpendicular to a scanning direction of the carriage by a predetermined distance each time the carriage reciprocatively scans on the recording medium; an ink tank mounted at a position where it does not exercise an influence on the reciprocative scan of the carriage and the conveyance of the recording medium by the recording medium conveying unit; an ink supply tube for supplying the ink from the ink tank to the recording head; and a control section for controlling an ink discharge state of the recording head on the basis of an image signal which is inputted from an upper apparatus. An ink jet recording method in a recording control method for the recording apparatus is also provided.

An apparatus for printing an image is provided. In this apparatus, each nozzle is operable to selectively create a stream of ink droplets having a plurality of volumes. The apparatus also includes a droplet deflector having a gas source. The gas source is positioned at an angle with respect to the stream of ink droplets and is operable to interact with the stream of ink droplets thereby separating ink droplets into printing and non-printing paths. Additionally, the apparatus includes a means for improving drop placement on the receiver media by making small adjustments to the volumes of the printing droplets.

An ink jet recording head having improved printing performance and improved manufacturing efficiency, a manufacturing method of the ink jet recording head, and an ink jet recording device. A head chip in which nozzles for jetting ink droplets are formed is fitted in an opening of an ink manifold via rubber sealing members, and the chip is exposed to the interior of ink supply chambers. Thus, the chip is efficiently cooled by the ink, and the temperature of the ink can be controlled so as to be within a predetermined range. Accordingly, no heat sink is necessary, and as a result, the head is easily manufactured and made compact. Since the chip is fitted in the manifold opening via the sealing members, application of an adhesive and curing time are unnecessary. Thus, manufacturing efficiency is improved.
