Abstract:
A steam turbine is provided. The steam turbine includes a housing and a steam inlet configured to discharge a primary steam flow within the housing. A stator is coupled to the housing and a rotor is coupled to the housing and located within the stator. The rotor and the stator are configured to define a primary flow path there between and in flow communication with the primary steam flow. The steam turbine includes a seal assembly coupled to the housing. The seal assembly includes a packing head and a plurality of seals. The packing head is configured to define a cooling flow path in flow communication with the rotor and configured to discharge a cooling steam flow toward the rotor. An anti-swirl device is coupled to the seal assembly and located between the rotor and the packing head.
Abstract:
A brush seal for a turbine including an annular layer of filaments having a generally L-shape including an axial portion of the filaments and a radial portion of filaments, wherein a first end of the filaments is at an end of the radial portion and faces a rotating component of the turbine and a second end region of the filaments is at an end of the axial portion of the filaments and is fastened to a stationary component of the turbine.
Abstract:
A self-cleaning hydrodynamic face seal for use with a rotary machine is provided. The hydrodynamic face seal includes a seal ring having a radially-extending seal face. In addition, the hydrodynamic face seal includes at least one brush coupled to the seal ring. The at least one brush includes a plurality of flexible elements extending away from the radially-extending seal face of the face seal ring.
Abstract:
A steam turbine is provided. The steam turbine includes a housing and a steam inlet coupled in flow communication to the housing which is configured to discharge a first steam flow within the housing. A stator is coupled to the housing and includes plurality of vanes. A rotor is coupled to the housing and located within the stator, wherein the rotor and the stator are configured to form a first flow path there between and in flow communication with the first steam flow. The rotor includes a plurality of blades coupled to the rotor, at least one root of the plurality of blades has a first side, a second side and a passageway coupled in flow communication to the first side and the second side. The passageway is configured to define a second flow path in flow communication with the first flow path and to discharge a second steam flow within the at least one root. The at least one root of the plurality of blades includes an angel wing in flow communication with the passageway and configured to seal the passageway from the first flow path.
Abstract:
An aspirating face seal for use with a rotary machine includes a rotating seal ring including a radially outer surface that includes an oblique portion. A stationary seal ring is coupled proximate the rotating seal ring such that a first gap is defined therebetween. The stationary seal ring is movable along a centerline axis of the rotary machine between an open position and a sealed position, and includes an extension member that extends across the first gap. An auxiliary seal includes at least one seal tooth that includes a seal tooth tip. The at least one seal tooth extends radially inward from the extension member such that a second gap is defined between the seal tooth tip and the oblique portion.
Abstract:
The present application provides for a brush seal system for use about a rotor of a rotary machine. The brush seal system may include a number of brush seal segments, with each of the brush seal segments having a number of bristles, and one or more of the brush seal segments including an elliptical profile so as to vary a clearance between the brush seal segments and the rotor.
Abstract:
A brush seal and brush seal segment for use in a rotary device are provided. In one embodiment, the invention provides a brush seal comprising: a plurality of brush seal segments, each segment including: an arcuate fence; an arcuate backplate substantially circumferentially coextensive with the arcuate fence, the arcuate backplate including a first end and a second end; and a plurality of brush seal bristles between the arcuate backplate and the arcuate fence, the plurality of brush seal bristles being angled with respect to a radial axis of the arcuate backplate and at least one of the first end and the second end of the arcuate backplate; and a static member to which at least one of the plurality of brush seal segments is affixed.
