Abstract: A sensor device includes an optical limiting structure including a metal layer with at least one metal particle having a size no greater than about 1500 nanometers, and a phase-change material layer disposed adjacent at least a portion of the metal layer, the phase-change material layer including a phase-change material, and a dendritic-metal layer disposed over at least a portion of the phase-change material layer of the optical limiting structure, the dendritic-metal layer including an organic compound including branching chain amino acid groups attached to a metal structure. The optical limiting structure is configured to transition from a first optical state to a second optical state when the phase-change material is heated above a critical temperature, with transmittance of light at a predetermined wavelength through the optical limiting structure being lower at the second optical state of the optical limiting structure in relation to the first optical state of the optical limiting structure.

Abstract: A modular office system for work stations includes at least one generally planar horizontal work top having a work surface and an opposed under surface. A plurality of legs are attached to the work top by a plurality of leg attachment structures. Each leg attachment structure has a first side which is attached to the under surface of the horizontal work top and a second side which is attached to one of the plurality of legs. A horizontal connection member interconnects the leg attachment structure of one work top to a leg attachment structure of another work top. A vertical connection member is attachable to the leg attachment structure and includes a vertically extending portion for securing a panel thereto. The vertical connection member has a slot for passage of the horizontal connection member therethrough to permit attachment of one work top to another work top with the vertical attachment member attached to the leg attachment structure.

Abstract: An improved method of framing data packets in a direct sequence spread spectrum (DSSS) system that uses one pseudo-noise code (PN-Code) to frame the packet with a start-of-packet (SOP) and end-of-packet (EOP) indicator, and a different PN-Code to encode the data payload. Furthermore, the SOP is represented by the framing PN-Code, and the EOP is represented by the inverse of the framing PN-Code. This method creates a robust framing system that enables a DSSS system to operate with a low threshold of detection, thus maximizing transmission range even in noisy environments. Additionally, the PN-Code used for the SOP and EOP indicators can be used to indicate an acknowledgement response.

Abstract: Communication circuitry uses a combination of Pseudo-Noise (PN) coded and non-PN coded transmission periods to represent different data values. In one embodiment, a number of data values are encoded into a smaller second number of encoded ternary values. The Pseudo-Noise (PN) codes are transmitted representing some of the encoded ternary values and no transmitted PN codes represent other encoded ternary values. The throughput of spread spectrum radio systems is increased by representing data values in fewer spread spectrum time slots.

Abstract: Method and apparatus for enabling authentication of on-line communications. In some embodiments, a message code is embedded in an e-mail, where the message code can be used by the recipient to verify the authenticity of the e-mail or of a Web site. In some embodiments, this code can be created for a particular e-mail message; in other embodiments, the code is created as a watermark for use by a customer or other a specific user or recipient. The message code is associated with both the e-mail message and the recipient. In the case of a message-specific code, a recipient can verify the e-mail message by inputting the code via a Web server to be looked up in the database. Provision is also made for including stenographic information in graphical or other codes as further authentication when accessing a Web site.
