The wing (10) having a negative dihedron for towing a load comprises a flexible canopy (12) which is defined between two lateral ends (14A, 14B) which are connected to each other, at the front, by a leading edge (20) and, at the rear, by a trailing edge (22). The canopy (12) has, between those two lateral ends (14A, 14B), a propulsive central region (16) which is bordered at one side and the other by two control regions (18A, 18B). The wing comprises at least a member (30A, 30B) for suspending the load adjacent to each lateral end (14A, 14B) and auxiliary maintenance means (32) which are capable of flattening the propulsive central region (16) adjacent to the leading edge (20) during flight. The trailing edge (22) of the wing is generally concave.

A control and safety device of a kite wing comprises a stiffening member 11 arranged at each tip of the wing 1 between sliding means 9A, 9B to allow a sliding pre-line 8A to pass through and to maintain a predetermined distance between the front and rear attachments 5A, 5B regardless of the tension applied to the ends of said pre-line.

A Kite Control Bar with Ninety-Degree Handles and Fail-Safe Release System is disclosed. The kite control bar utilizes a metal bar with removable metal handles that are attached to the kit control bar at a ninety-degree angle. The kite control bar also incorporates a release system that is a pull pin located on the kite control bar. If required to de-power the kite, the release system will release the kite control lines which will deflate the kite and negate the kites strong pull force. The metal handle attached to the kite control bar at ninety-degrees in conjunction with the release system will significantly improve the control of the kite when performing the sport of kite surfing or kite boarding.

This device is a safety system for a kite use that allows rotational independence of the user in relation to the flying control bar and the kite. This safety system also induces stable and powerless descent of the kite when safety system is activate. Easy and quick recovery prior to re-launching the kite is another benefiting feature to this safety system device.

A control device for a kite comprises an elongate rigid control bar extending either side of a central region to provide separated hand-grippable regions for a kite user and anchor points for first and second control lines of a kite. A third control line for the kite is attached to a harness loop at one end and extends from the harness loop towards the kite. A stopper is rigidly fixed to the third control line adjacent the harness loop. The stopper is wedge shaped in a predetermined plane. A body is attached to the central region of the control bar. The body has a cavity for releasably receiving the stopper and an opening in a wall of the cavity. The cavity is wedge shape towards the opening for rotating the stopper to the predetermined plane when it engages against the inner walls of the cavity.

A line system for steering a kite is described, which achieves the five elementary functions for steering a kite (steering to the right, steering to the left, safety function, rearward flight/start-up and depowering) with only three lines.

An apparatus for controlling a plurality of lines to a light weight flying device such as a kite or model airplane stores, winds up, and releases the lines on individual, separable spools. The spools are held in a recess in a housing. Each line leads from its spool through spaced apart individual line guides to the device so that the device may be controlled by manipulation of the housing. A winding handle is mounted on an arm connected to an axle on which the spools are rotatably mounted in the recess. In a first, or winding, position of the arm, rotation of the handle rotates the axle and the spools for winding up the lines. An anti reverse ratchet mechanism prevents unwinding of the lines. In a second, or release, position of the arm, the spools are freed from rotation with the axle, an adjustable drag is operative to prevent free spooling or backlash, and the anti reverse is releasable by a manual control for controllably releasing the lines.

An improved kite control and quick release system useful in kitesurfing and other kite related sports, comprising a hollow control bar capped at each end by symmetrical, elongated end fittings. The end fittings project kiteward, away from the sailor, with kite leads secured to the distal aspect of each end fitting. Each end fitting includes one or more concave winding surfaces to accommodate the winding and stowage of kite leads and lines. The system also includes an improved quick release means which, according to one preferred embodiment, comprises an aperture formed within one of the end fittings, a stop, and a release tether with handle. One of the two kite leads is passed through the aperture before being secured to the release tether. The stop, attached to the lead between the end fitting and the tether, secures the lead to the control bar while the kite is underway. The sailor can quickly release the force of the kite, de-powering the kite, by releasing the control bar while restraining the tethered release handle. The kite lead opposite the tethered lead flies free, rotating the control bar and kite and spilling wind from the kite. Once de-powered, the sailor can easily regain control of the bar and redeploy the kite with minimal effort.

A multi-tether kite control device uses a racheting mechanism to rewind the tether reels. The mechanism is activated by a pull-string attached to the belt or torso of the operator. By repetitively moving the device away from and toward his body, the operator can rewind one or both tethers without releasing his grasp upon the device handles. Separate reels are used to coil the tethers attached to the leading edges of the kite to provide a controlled braking action.

A preferred embodiment of the present invention includes a kite having a sail with a left and right wing, each being connected to a supporting frame, with the frame having a leading edge support member associated with a left wing strut member and with a right wing strut member. It also includes bridle apparatus associated with the frame, the bridle apparatus having a horizontal line member connected to the leading edge support member, a left wing vertical line member connected to the left wing vertical support member, and a right wing vertical line member connected to the right wing strut member. The horizontal line member is connected to the left and right wing vertical line members at upper left and upper right control line contact points. The set of control lines includes an upper left line and an upper right line connected to the upper left and upper right control line contact points. The set of control lines further includes a lower left line and a lower right line connected to lower left and lower right control line points. A left control handle is connected to the upper left and lower left control lines, and the right control handle is connected to the upper right and lower right control lines. The control handle members include a design which mechanically amplifies the reverse flight signals relative to the forward flight control line signals. Also included is a three-line embodiment, an ornithoptic embodiment, and an inflated airfoil construction.
