A mobile vehicle mounted highway striping system is provided for single operator driving and controlling of the stripe painting operation. Tracking control systems are provided for striping about curved vehicle paths. Automated tracking systems correct tracking errors with the only interactivity of the operator being the steering function of aligning the vehicle path with a designated striping pattern path. A video monitor comparing the striping vehicle position relative to a designated striping path is worn as a headpiece by the driver. Thus, a semi-transparent video tracking pattern displays lateral positioning of a stripe being painted by the moving vehicle as the driver keeps eyes directed upon the roadway. Automatic tracking around curves is provided. The painting vehicle is steered to follow a designated path position on the video monitor.

This invention provides for painting a second coat upon a set of parallel striped lines in exact registration in one pass of a motorized painting vehicle for such applications as painting aircraft taxi stripes at airports. Beads are also registered on one of the lines in the same pass. Provisions are made for maintaining registration about curved lines by steering around curves with a shortened wheelbase vehicle and by extending paint nozzles for striping a plurality of parallel lines, typically a center twelve inch wide yellow line between two six inch wide black lines, outboard from one side of the painting vehicle. The vehicle comprises two four wheeled units articulated together by a universal articulation joint permitting vertical articulation so that the leading and trailing wheels may be lifted off the ground to reduce the wheelbase for steering around curves. Balance for articulation is established by paint tanks being moved forward and rearward on the two units for starting balance, with dynamic balance being retained by feeding equal weights of beads and paints respectively from the front and rear unit tanks. The rear unit contains a transaxle drive unit with constant torque drive for maintaining a straight line without operator steering. With this striper system the closedown time at airports for striping runways is reduced significantly at great savings.

A common non-dedicated pick-up truck tows a trailer mounted modular paint striping system that may be broken down into a hand pushed parking lot type of striper sub-system or a ride behind motorized airport runway striper sub-system for a versatility of operational environments with one or two coat striping in multiple colors and widths. The towed trailer carries two 55 gallon paint drums of different colored paint, loaded and unloaded by a one person loading winch. Thus, the striping system controlled by a single person provides the versatility of on-highway and off-highway striping.

Marker devices, each comprising a base with an upright post thereon, are molded from an elastomeric material. A marker device is attached by adhesive on the base thereof to each paint striping on a worn down street and each maintenance cover mounted on the worn down street. Once the marker devices are in place on the worn down street, the posts thereof must withstand the punishment of not only being flattened by truck tires, and the tracts of a paving machine that is being used to lay down the new coating of hot asphalt on the worn down street, but also the hot asphalt, and still spring back to their upright position. Thus, when the stripings are to be repainted on the resurfaced street and when the maintenance covers are to be adjusted upwardly to the level of the new coating of asphalt on the resurfaced street their exact locations on the street are immediately indicated by the posts of the marker devices without having to make any measurements.

An apparatus mountable on a vehicle is provided for pre-marking pavement for striping or lining comprising a distance sensor which emits an infrared light beam toward the roadway edge or curb, where it is reflected by a reflector mounted on a stick held by a roadway worker. The reflected light is received by a beam receiver, and the distance of the vehicle from the roadway edge is computed and provided to a marking device, which has a paint gun movable transversely on a carriage guide to position the paint gun a predetermined distance from the roadway edge and mark the pavement in response to the distance measurement.

Pavement line marking apparatus adapted to detect old line markings on a pavement surface and to repaint such markings or alternatively to paint new line markings to a desired pattern, the apparatus comprising a support beam (11) with a marking detection element (80) arranged at one end such that any old line markings are detectable thereby, upon movement of the detection element 80 over the desired pavement surface, paint applicator means (75,76) arranged mounted from the support boom rearwardly from the marking detection element (80) for movement transversely of the direction of movement of the support boom (11) along the desired pavement surface, and control means actuable in response to a signal from the marking detection element to move said paint applicator means to a position over the old line markings and to operate the paint applicator means to deposit paint along the old line markings on the pavement surface.

A method and apparatus for marking a line, such as the centerline, along a roadway, using a vehicle carrying paint marking apparatus, in which a pair of television cameras, one mounted on each side of the vehicle, view the edges of the roadway and project the images onto a split screen. By keeping the images on the screen in a predetermined relationship the operator can steer the vehicle in a path along the roadway uniformly spaced from its edges. Preferably a third camera, centrally located on the vehicle, views the vanishing point of the roadway when straight and the image of the vanishing point is registered with a predetermined mark associated with the screen.
