Abstract: A fluid power apparatus is connected to a pressurized fluid supply and a conventional helm pump controlled by the helm of a vessel to shift the rudder. The apparatus comprises an actuator cylinder connectable to the rudder, and a servo cylinder and a main valve connected to the helm pump to pass fluid therebetween and between the actuator cylinder. The actuator cylinder and servo cylinder have respective bodies and piston rods, and portions of the servo cylinder and actuator cylinder are connected together for concurrent simultaneous movement along respective longitudinal axes. Valve shifting structure is responsive to a change in fluid signal from the helm pump applied to the servo apparatus. Fluid diverting structure is responsive to a threshold supply pressure so as to actuate the valve to stop flow of supply fluid when supply pressure drops below the threshold pressure. When pressurized fluid is available, the valve is actuated in response to a fluid signal from the helm pump and the actuator cylinder receives pressurized fluid from the valve and directs fluid back to the valve. When pressurized fluid is not available, the valve is actuated in response to a fluid signal from the helm pump and the valve is effectively by-passed and the actuator cylinder receives fluid from the helm pump and is actuated by manually applied pressures.

Abstract: A catamaran tiller having a grip is provided to permit tension to be applied to the tiller more easily. In one embodiment the grip extends laterally from a sleeve which fits over the tiller rod and is secured thereto at a desired location. Abstract: A removable rudder assembly for a boat includes a generally key-hole shaped rudder lock member which is adapted to fit into a key-hole shaped slot in the keel of the boat adjacent the stern. A rudder shaft extends through the rudder lock member, and a rudder is mounted on the rudder shaft. A tiller is removably attached to the upper end of the rudder shaft. The rudder assembly is removed from the boat by detaching the tiller, removing the rudder lock member from the slot, and withdrawing the shaft rearwardly from the slot.

Abstract: An illustrative embodiment of the invention provides a ship's steering system or helm adapted to provide a control signal to the ship's rudder such that the response of the rudder to the rotation of the helm is substantially non-linear from hardover to hardover wherein a portion centered about midship is linear such that hardover to hardover rudder can be ordered in less than one turn of the wheel. That is, less rotation of the wheel is necessary when large helm or rudder orders are required for heading changes and a greater rotation of the wheel about midships is necessary to desensitize rudder changes to large wheel rotations in order to make heading keeping easier.

Abstract: A self-steering arrangement for sailboats comprising a counterbalanced vane pivoted on a horizontal axis and coupled by cables to the trim tab of an auxiliary rudder. The vane is pivotable about a second horizontal axis orthogonal to the first to accommodate variations in wind force. The vane is also pivotable about a vertical axis relative to its mounting to permit it to be aligned with the apparent wind direction relative to the course desired for the boat. The entire arrangement is so mounted that the rudder portion may be withdrawn out of the water to permit conventional maneuvering, and is readily mountable and demountable on a boat without disturbing the normal operation thereof.
