摘要: A stock control computer system includes a memory for storing a current stock list based on product codes. An electronic version of a store purchase receipt, including product codes for the items purchased, is sent from the store to the customer's home computer where it is used to update the current stock list by addition of products purchased. Items are deleted from the current stock list as they are disposed of by the customer, in response to an electronic indication of the corresponding product codes produced, for example, by scanning product packaging with a bar code scanner. When the customer initiates a home stock check, the current stock list is compared with a predetermined stock level and an indication of which items need replacement is produced. This indication may be displayed, printed or transmitted electronically to the store. The electronic purchase receipt may also be used to generate and update a correlation between product codes, such as bar codes, and product descriptions, this correlation also being stored in memory.

摘要: Printer driver architectures and methods of providing adaptable printer driver architectures are described. In one embodiment, a printer driver architecture includes a kernel which is configured to implement printer driver functionalities. At least one interface is provided into the kernel which is configured to permit addition and incorporation of at least one operation-specific functionality, which is not specifically provided by the kernel's printer driver functionalities. In another embodiment, a kernel is defined and configured to implement printer driver functionalities. A plurality of interfaces are defined in the kernel and are configured to permit addition and incorporation of various operation-specific functionalities which are not specifically provided by the kernel's printer driver functionalities. At least one operation-specific functionality is interfaced through at least one of the defined interfaces in the kernel to provide a printer driver functionality that the kernel would not otherwise have. In yet another embodiment, an abstract base class is defined which pertains to at least one operation-specific functionality of a printer driver. The abstract base class is used to define an abstract interface. The abstract interface is defined for a hierarchy of classes pertaining to the at least one operation-specific functionality. The abstract base class is capable of implementing at least some, but not all of the interface it defines. At least one class is derived from the base class which implements all unimplemented portions of the abstract interface.

摘要: This disclosure sets forth a verifier for verifying the quality of print such as bar codes in combination with a printer wherein the printer can be controlled to provide proper printing functions for printing in response to the verifier input. The printer upon receipt of a particular report from the verifier can stop the printing such as bar code printing as to a bad label, overstrike a bad label, or reprint the label. Further to this extent, the printer can be controlled by operator intervention on the control panel or by automatic input through the controller of the printer to provide for the respective necessary and correct print or bar codes being printed.

摘要: Print information to be printed by a printing apparatus is generated in response to a print request command, and coordinate information representing a plotting area of a generated print object is registered in a registration area. When a character string is printed, the registered coordinate information is compared with character-string print position information and whether or not there is overlap is determined. The type of processing for printing the character string is switched based upon the results of the determination, and it is possible to set a print processing mode that is optimum for a print object.

摘要: A printer performs both the processing and printing tasks efficiently using controller firmware with a single data path (i.e., one ASIC). The printer has a periodic print cycle in which data for one page or plane (if multi-colored) is printed during each cycle. The print cycle is typically longer than the time needed to print one page or plane. Thus, the print cycle can be segmented into a “printing phase” in which the printing mechanism prints data, and a “non-printing” phase in which the printing mechanism does not print data. The controller firmware interleaves printing operations with non-printing operations during the printing and non-printing phases of the print cycle, respectively. During the printing phase, the controller is dedicated to printing a page or plane. During the non-printing phase, the controller is free to perform other tasks, such as compressing raster data for subsequent printing. The printer is configured with a set of operating parameters that enable the controller firmware to alternate between printing and non-printing tasks (e.g., data compression). Once released from manufacturing, the printer may, in practice, not perform optimally to the specifications. Thus, another aspect of this invention is to tune the operating parameters to achieve optimal performance for a specific printer. This tuning is a self-tuning technique that is performed in post-manufacture real-time, while the printer is in operation.

摘要: Calibrated dither masks adaptable to most printers are constructed in such a way that the threshold values can be adapted to a printer so that said printer can print the originally intended number of distinct tone levels. This adaptation can be done computationally so that the time it takes is not prohibitive. Furthermore, the resulting calibrated dither mask is such that there is no need for a tone reproduction curve in the halftoning process.
