    Abstract: A surface cleaning apparatus has a suction motor actuator that is actuatable to actuate the suction motor to operate in a first mode of operation and to operate in a second mode of operation, the first mode of operation defining a first discrete power level for the suction motor and the second mode of operation defining a second discrete power level for the suction motor. The first mode of operation is enabled when the first power pack having a first level of power is provided to power the surface cleaning apparatus and the second mode of operation is not enabled until a second power pack is provided such that the surface cleaning apparatus has a second level of on board power that is greater than the first level of on board power.

    Abstract: A hand vacuum cleaner having a non-cyclonic chamber, which has an openable portion which is moveable between a closed position and an open position, and, in the closed position, the non-cyclonic chamber has a volume. A rigid porous member is provided in the non-cyclonic chamber. The rigid porous member is moveably mounted between a first position and a second position. In the first position, the openable portion is closed and the rigid porous member is in an in use position. In the second position, a rearward end of the rigid porous member is located exterior to the volume. A lower wall of the rigid porous member is planar.

    Abstract: A surface cleaning apparatus comprises a cyclone positioned in an air flow path having a tangential air inlet with an inlet end, an outlet end, a cross-sectional flow area in a direction of flow through the tangential air inlet, a height in a direction of the cyclone axis of rotation and a width in a direction transverse to the height of the tangential air inlet. The air flow path comprises an air flow conduit at the inlet end of the tangential inlet having a cross-sectional flow area in a direction transverse to a direction of flow through the air flow conduit. The cross-sectional flow area of the tangential air inlet is greater than the cross-sectional flow area of the air flow conduit and one of the width and height of the tangential air inlet is greater than the other of the width and height of the tangential air inlet.

    Abstract: A hand vacuum cleaner having a front end and a rear end positioned in a rearward direction rearward of the front end is described herein. The hand vacuum cleaner includes a dirty fluid inlet, an air treatment member downstream of the dirty fluid inlet, a pre-motor filter positioned in a pre-motor filter housing downstream from the air treatment member, a suction motor downstream of the pre-motor filter, an air flow path extending from the pre-motor filter to the suction motor, a clean air outlet downstream of the suction motor, and a handle. The pre-motor filter has a longitudinal length in the rearward direction that is longer than a transverse length in a direction transverse to the rearward direction. The pre-motor filter housing has first and second rearwardly extending pre-motor filter housing sidewalls and the pre-motor filter has first and second rearwardly extending pre-motor filter sidewalls that are positioned transversely inwardly of the pre-motor filter housing sidewalls. The pre-motor filter sidewalls are an upstream face of the pre-motor filter and the pre-motor filter has an inner cavity that is downstream of the upstream face.
