Abstract:
A system for measuring flow of process fluid through process piping in an industrial process includes a flow restriction element in the process pipe. A first differential pressure transmitter is configured to measure a first differential pressure across the flow restriction element in response to flow of process fluid. A second differential pressure transmitter configured to measure a second differential pressure in the process fluid across the flow restriction element. Circuitry performs diagnostics based upon the first differential pressure and the second differential pressure.
Abstract:
In a mailing machine, an image element included in a postage meter indicium printed on a mail piece is transported past a linear image capture device. The image capture device is operated to produce a smeared image of the image element. The smeared image is then automatically analyzed to detect failures in the print elements of a postage meter that is part of the mailing machine.
Abstract:
A system and method for detecting abnormal operation of a hydrocracker includes a model to model the hydrocracker. The model may be configurable to include one or more regression models corresponding to different operating regions of the portion of the hydrocracker. The system and method may also determine if a monitored temperature difference variable deviates significantly from the temperature difference variable predicted by the model. If there is a significant deviation, this may indicate an abnormal operation.
Abstract:
Methods and apparatus are provided for reducing torque ripple in a permanent magnet motor system comprising a permanent magnet motor coupled to an inverter. The method comprises the steps of receiving a torque command, generating a torque ripple reduction signal in response to the torque command, modifying operational control signals in response to the torque ripple reduction signal to generate reduced ripple operational control signals, and providing the reduced ripple operational control signals to the inverter for control of the permanent magnet motor.
Abstract:
A system and method for detecting abnormal situations associated with a stirred vessel in a process plant receives statistical data associated with a pressure within a stirred vessel. A pressure signal associated with the pressure in the vessel is filtered by a digital filter to isolate a frequency component corresponding to pressure changes caused by the movement of a blade of an agitator through a fluid. For example, a pressure sensor device disposed at least partially within the stirred vessel may generate the statistical data based on a pressure signal. The statistical data is analyzed to detect whether one or more abnormal situations associated with an agitator of the stirred vessel exist. For example, the statistical data may be analyzed to detect whether the agitator is broken/unbalanced, corroded, missing a blade or multiple blades, etc. If an abnormal situation is detected, an indicator of the abnormal situation may be generated.
Abstract:
A method for printing indicia on mailpieces at an increased average speed. The system includes: a postal scale for determining a postage amount for a mail piece; a printer; and a postage meter responsive to the postal scale to control the printer to print an indicium representative of the postage amount. The postage meter further includes: a programmable controller; a secure mechanism for accounting for postage amounts expended; and an indicia generator. The programmable controller is programmed in accordance with the method of the present invention to: respond to a first signal from the postal scale to debit the secure mechanism for a minimum postage amount and to generate an indicium representative of the minimum amount; and, if the determined postage amount equals the minimum amount, respond to a second signal representative of the determined postage amount to print the indicium representative of the minimum postage amount; and, if the determined postage amount is greater than the minimum postage amount, respond to the second signal to debit the secure mechanism for the determined postage amount less the minimum postage amount; delete the indicium representative of the minimum postage amount; generate an indicium representative of the determined postage amount; and print the indicium representative of the determined postage amount on the mail piece.
Abstract:
A weighing system and a postage metering system including such a weighing system. The weighing system includes a transport assembly having a transport for receiving and outputting mail pieces to be weighed and for supporting mail pieces while they are weighed, and a feeder for successively feeding the mail pieces to the transport. A transducer supports the transport and generates and output representative of the load presented by pairs of mail pieces on the transport. After a current item and a previous item are weighed together on the transport, the transport is energized to output the previous item and replace the previous item with the current item, and the feeder is energized to input a next item to the transport as a new current item. The postage metering system computes the weight of the current mail piece as the difference between the weight measured for the current mail piece and the previous mail piece weighed together and the weight of the previous mail piece and determines the appropriate postage in accordance with that weight. The postage metering system prints the previous mail piece with the postage determined for it when it was the current mail piece as it is output. Cumulative error is tracked and when it exceeds predetermined limits a single mail piece is weighed to reinitialize the error accumulation cycle.
Abstract:
A positive displacement rotary pump including a housing having an internal chamber and inlet and discharge ports, a sealing land on the housing between a downstream end of the inlet port and an upstream end of the discharge port, and a rotating group in the internal chamber defining a plurality of pump chambers. The pump chambers traverse in succession and at regular intervals the inlet port and the sealing land and the discharge port. The housing has a stationary pre-charging passage which communicates with the discharge port and overlaps the sealing land. The rotating group includes a plurality of rotating pre-charging passages which communicate with respective ones of the pump chambers. As each rotating pre-charging passage attains overlap with the stationary pre-charging passage, the low pressure of the fluid trapped in the corresponding pump chamber sealed closed in the sealing land increases rapidly and induces a pulse in the fluid in the discharge port and in the fluid system connected to the discharge port. The angular separation between the rotating pre-charging passages is randomly unequal so that the intervals between pulses are irregular. The irregular intervals between the pulses suppresses tonal pump noise.
Abstract:
A process and apparatus for treating contaminated water involving passing water containing contaminants as a stream through a filter to remove the contaminants and form a purified water stream, directing the purified water stream to an effluent discharge outlet and accumulating a portion of the purified water in a reservoir under pressure, preferably through action of a trapped air pocket in the reservoir, and regenerating the filter by using the purified water in the reservoir to back-flush the filter.
Abstract:
Methods and systems for using ink-jet technology for high speed printing are provided. Print growth between pixels in an image is significantly reduced or eliminated by adjusting the printing of the pixels based on the status of the following pixel to be printed, i.e., whether the following pixel is either black or white. If a black pixel, formed by a plurality of columns of dots, is being followed by a white pixel, the column of dots closest to the white pixel will not be printed, and the column of dots in the black pixel next to the column of dots closest to the white pixel are staggered such that the pixel appears filled despite the absence of the column of dots closest to the white pixel and will still be properly read as a black pixel by a scanner reading the image.
