    摘要: An optical component (48) for introducing optical aberrations to a light beam defining an optical axis (28) is described, comprising a fluid chamber (46) having a first fluid (56) and at least a second fluid (58) therein, the first and second fluid (56, 58) being non-miscible, the first fluid (56) and the second fluid (58) being in contact along an interface (60) extending through the fluid chamber (46) substantially transverse to the optical axis (28), the first and second fluids (56, 58) having different indices of refraction, the first fluid (56) being substantially electrically insulating and the second fluid (58) being substantially electrically conductive; at least a first electrode (62-70) separated from the second fluid (58) and at least a second electrode (72) acting on the second fluid to alter the shape of the interface (60) in dependence on a voltage applied between the first and second electrode (62-70, 72). The at least one first electrode (62-70) is arranged in an intermediate portion with respect to the interface (60) such that the intermediate portion (A, B) of the interface (60) is moved substantially in direction of the optical axis (28) in dependence on the voltage applied between the at least one first electrode (62-70) and the at least one second electrode (72).

    摘要: A variable lens system includes a chamber with an optical axis extending through the chamber. The chamber contains a first fluid and a second fluid in contact over a meniscus extending transverse the optical axis. The perimeter of the meniscus is fixedly located on an internal surface of the chamber. The fluids are substantially immiscible and have different indices of refraction. A pump is arranged to controllably alter the shape of the meniscus by altering the relative volume of each of the fluids contained within the chamber.

    摘要: A switchable optical element has an optical axis. The element includes a chamber, a wave front modifier having a face defining an interior surface of the chamber (the face extending transverse the optical axis), a first fluid and a second fluid. The fluids are immiscible and in contact over an interface. The optical element is switchable between a first discrete state in which the first fluid substantially covers the face of the wave front modifier, and a second discrete state in which the second fluid substantially covers the face of the wave front modifier, wherein the chamber encloses both fluids in both discrete states, and the interlace extends transverse the optical axis in the first discrete state.

    摘要: An optical scanning device (1) includes a radiation source (7), a detector (23) and a beam splitter (9). The radiation source (7) provides an incident radiation beam (4, 20) along a first optical path (19a) for scanning an information layer (2) of an optical record carrier (3). The detector (23) detects at least a portion of the radiation beam (22) reflected from the optical record carrier (3). The beam splitter (9) transmits the incident radiation beam (4) received from the radiation source along the first optical path (19a) towards the optical record carrier. The beam splitter (9) also transmits the reflected beam (22) received from the optical record carrier (3) along a second, different optical path (19b) towards the detector. The optical scanning device further includes a beam-deflecting element (30; 130; 230; 330; 630; 830; 930) positioned on the second optical path (19b) between the beam splitter (9) and the detector (23). The beam-deflecting element (30; 130; 230; 330; 630; 830; 930) is arranged to controllably deflect the path of the reflected radiation beam (22) for adjusting the lateral position of said reflected radiation beam incident upon the detector (23) over a predetermined range.

The element comprises a fluid system including a first fluid (44) and a different, second fluid (46), a wavefront modifier (26) having a face (28); and a fluid system switch for acting on the fluid system to switch between the first and second discrete states of the element. When the element is in the first discrete state, the face (28) of the wavefront modifier (26) is substantially covered by the first fluid (44). The fluid system switch comprises a configuration of electrodes arranged to act on the fluid system by the application of electrowetting forces and a voltage control system arranged to control voltages applied to the configuration of electrodes to switch between the first and second discrete states of the element.

The element comprises a chamber (215) defined by at least one side wall (270), with an optical axis (90) extending through the chamber (215).
