摘要: An apparatus and method for drying a receiver media (30) in an ink jet printer. The apparatus generally comprises a means for creating a pressure differential between the upper surface (20) and the lower surface (50) of the receiver media (30), wherein the pressure at the lower surface (50) of the receiver media (30) is lower than the pressure at the upper surface (20) of the receiver media (30). The pressure differential-creating means may include a vacuum pump (70) adapted to generate a vacuum at the lower surface (50) of the receiver media (30) or an air pump (130) adapted to pass air currents (140) across the lower surface (50) of the receiver media (30) to cause a “Bernoulli effect”. The method generally comprises the steps of depositing ink droplets (10) onto the upper surface (20) of the receiver media (30); and creating a pressure differential between the upper surface (20) and the lower surface (50) of the receiver media (30), whereby carrier fluid contained in ink droplets (10) is drawn through the receiver media (30) from the upper surface (20) to the lower surface (50).

摘要: A printhead has a fluid chamber having an orifice, an associated fluid drop forming mechanism, and an associated fluid drop steering device. The fluid drop forming mechanism is operable to apply to fluid present in the fluid chamber energy sufficient to cause a fluid drop to be ejected from the orifice. The fluid drop steering device is operable to optionally apply to fluid present in the fluid chamber energy insufficient to cause drop formation prior to the fluid being ejected from the orifice. The fluid drop steering device is distinct from the fluid drop forming mechanism.

摘要: A method an apparatus for maintaining a predetermined ejected ink drop volume in a continuous inkjet printer is provided. An ink parameter, for example, temperature, velocity, flow rate, viscosity, is monitored. A time period between activation control signals provided to an ink drop forming mechanism is varied in response to a change in the ink parameter. The apparatus includes an ink parameter monitoring device which provides an input signal to a controller. The controller varies the time period between activation control signals provided to the ink drop forming mechanism.

摘要: A continuous stream ink jet printhead includes an ink droplet forming mechanism operable to selectively create a stream of ink droplets having a plurality of volumes and a droplet deflector having a gas source. The gas source is operable to interact with the stream of ink droplets thereby separating ink droplets having one of the plurality of volumes from ink droplets having another of the plurality of volumes. A sensor senses ambient pressure transients and is coupled to a controller which adjusts the gas flow, through a pressure compensation mechanism, to compensate for pressure transients.

摘要: An apparatus for printing an image is provided. The apparatus includes a print head with nozzles of differing diameters. This allows multiple printing drop sizes for multi-level printing, thus achieving higher print quality at the same resolution. Additionally, each nozzle is operable to selectively create a stream of ink droplets having a plurality of volumes. The apparatus also includes a droplet deflector having a gas source. The gas source is positioned at an angle with respect to the stream of ink droplets and is operable to interact with the stream of ink droplets thereby separating ink droplets into printing and non-printing paths.

摘要: A method for preventing the misdirection of the initial ink droplets discharged from the nozzle of an asymmetric heat-type ink jet printer is provided. The method includes the step of providing power to the heating element that is adjacent to the inkjet nozzle at a higher level than the level normally used during the printing operation. When the power is supplied to the heater in the form of a train of electrical pulses, at least the first electrical pulse has at least one of a greater amplitude, width, or frequency at the beginning of the printing operation than the amplitude, width, and frequency normally used during the printing operation. The method enhances resolution by avoiding the off-target deflection of ink droplets that may happen at the beginning of a printing operation as a result of thermal inertia in the region of the heater and nozzle.

The printer includes a print head (10) having a surface (14) thereon, the surface (14) including an orifice region (18) having at least one ink-ejection orifice (16), a first gutter (22) disposed proximate one side of the orifice region (18) adapted for connection to a source of a cleaning fluid, and a second gutter (24) disposed proximate an opposite side of the orifice region (18) adapted for connection to a receiver for the cleaning fluid. A cover member (40) is positionable opposite the orifice region (18) and the gutters (22,24) for forming a sealed enclosure (42) thereof defining a cavity (44) sized to allow fluid flow therethrough from the first gutter (22) over the orifice region (18) to the second gutter (24). A pump (36) is provided, preferably integrally formed in the print head (10), and connected to the gutters (22, 24) through channels (28, 30, 32, 34) in the print head (10) substrate for the circulation of the cleaning fluid. A filter (38) can also be provided between one of the gutters (22, 24) and the pump (36) for removing contaminants from the cleaning fluid. A source of acoustic energy (54) can also be provided for exciting the cleaning fluid as the cleaning fluid flows through the cavity (44) for facilitating the cleaning action.

摘要: Apparatus for controlling an ink jet printer includes a substrate; an ink delivery channel below the substrate; and a nozzle bore through the substrate and opening into the ink delivery channel to establish an ink flow path. A resistive heater has an upper surface above the upper surface of the substrate and defines a symmetrical radially-outward heater perimeter edge. Ink tends to form a meniscus on the upper surface of the heater, the meniscus tending to pin at the heater perimeter edge. A plurality of electrodes make contact with the heater at spaced-apart positions below the perimeter edge. The ink may flow in a continuous stream from the nozzle bore. The heater defines a plurality of sections, each section having a pair of electrodes. The actuator is adapted to apply the power source across selected pairs of the electrodes such that actuation of only a portion of the heater sections produces an asymmetric application of heat to the stream to control the direction and the amount of deflection of the stream as a function of the activated heater sections.
