Abstract: An approach is provided for vehicle map data update. The approach involves, for example, processing sensor data captured by a sensor of a vehicle to detect a machine-readable visual representation. The machine-readable visual representation encodes map data corresponding to a map tile of a geographic database. The approach also involves decoding the map data from the machine-readable visual representation. The approach further involves updating a local copy of the map tile stored in the vehicle based on the map data.

Abstract: A method, system, and computer program product is provided, for example, for learning about a road sign using clustering of pre-processed road sign recognition observations. In an example embodiment, the method may include receiving, by a layered clustering system, the pre-processed road sign recognition observations generated by at least one sensor installed on a vehicle. The pre-processed road sign recognition observations include at least two continuous-value attributes. The method may further include creating, by the layered clustering system, a first clustering label corresponding to a first attribute of the at least two continuous-value attributes for generating a plurality of first clusters. Additionally, the method may include sequentially clustering, by the layered clustering system, the pre-processed road sign recognition observations in the plurality of first clusters with the created first clustering label based on a second attribute of the at least two continuous-value attributes for generating a plurality of second clusters. Further, once the clustering of the pre-processed road sign recognition observations has been performed in this way, the method may further include filtering and removing, by the layered clustering system, outliers of the plurality of first clusters and the plurality of second clusters.

Abstract: An approach is provided for traffic sign learning based near a ramp. The approach involves, for example, determining that a learned sign (e.g., a traffic speed speed) is located within a distance threshold of a junction between a main road link and a ramp road link. The approach also involves assigning a learned sign value (e.g., a speed value) of the learned sign to the main road link, the ramp road link, or a combination thereof based on a topology of the junction, a lateral offset of the learned sign, an upstream sign value, or a combination thereof. The topology of the junction indicates a side of the main road link that the ramp road link occurs. The lateral offset of the learned sign is with respect to the main road link, the ramp road link, or a combination thereof.
