摘要: A starter mill adapted for use with a whipstock to mill a window through the casing of a well for deviating the direction of drilling. The starter mill includes a bearing nose which is utilized to indicate completion of the milling process. As the mill nears completion of the milling process, the bearing nose will become wedged between the whipstock face and the casing preventing further downhole movement. The bearing nose will engage whipstock and casing, allowing the work string to continue to rotate although the decreased torque resulting from the absence of milling provides a clear signal that the milling operation is complete. The cutters of the mill are spaced a predetermined distance from the bearing nose to ensure completion of the casing window.

摘要: A system for maintaining an optimum pressure balance within an inner chamber of a drilling head for improved seal life and integrity. The system maintains a pressure differential across the seals thereby preventing well fluids from contaminating the seals and improving their useful life. The drive ring of a drilling head is rotatably supported by a series of bearings disposed within a bearing chamber. The secondary chamber of the drilling head is sealed to prevent contaminants from entering the chamber and fouling the seals. The seals withstand the borehole well pressures to prevent the introduction of contaminants, by maintaining a pressure differential across the seals. The present system compensates for variations in the borehole pressure. A pressure compensator is in communication with the borehole to activate a lubricant pump for increasing lubricant pressure within the inner chamber in response to increased borehole pressures. A relief valve associated with the inner chamber relieves pressure in the seal chamber to maintain lubricant pressure at optimum levels when borehole pressure decreases for controlled operation of the seals. Additional check valves are included in the inner chamber to control the chamber pressure while preventing contamination of the lubricant.

摘要: A drilling head with dual rotating stripper rubbers designed for high pressure drilling operations ensuring sealing under the extreme conditions of high flow or high pressure wells such as horizontal drilling. The dual stripper rubbers seal on the same diameter yet are manufactured of different materials for different sealing functions. The lower stripper rubber is manufactured from a more rigid, abrasive resistant material to divert the flow from the well. The upper stripper rubber is manufactured of a softer sealing material that will closely conform to the outer diameter of the drill string thereby preventing the flow of fluids through the drilling head.

摘要: A method and apparatus for setting an underwater conductor pipe in which the conductor pipe is lowered into the wellhole on a drill string as the borehole is being formed by a drill bit and underreamer positioned at the end of the drill string below the end of the conductor pipe. The drill string and conductor pipe are detachably interconnected by a housing latch which includes means for detachably securing the drill string and drilling assembly to the conductor pipe. The drill string is provided with an upper latch sub, which retains and supports the drill string in its fully extended position within the conductor pipe, and a lower latch sub which retains and supports the drill string in the retracted position. As the apparatus is lowered a drill motor actuates the drilling assembly such that the well hole is formed in the ocean floor. Drilling continues until the permanent guide base of the conductor pipe engages the ocean floor. Thereafter, the upper latch sub is released and the drill string is retracted until the lower latch engages the latchhousing. The outer annulus of the conductor pipe is then cemented into place while pressure within the conductor pipe is maintained to prevent the cement from travelling up the inside of the conductor pipe. Once the cement is set, the latchhousing is released so that the drill string and latchhousing can be removed from the conductor pipe.

In the underreamer form of the present invention, the arms are pivotally mounted in slots in the body and means is provided for moving their arms to their cutting position with their lower ends positioned radially outward from the body.

摘要: A thermostat monitoring and controlling the temperature of produce ripening within an enclosure and featuring a bridge circuit sensing errors between the actual and desired temperatures in which the desired temperature is selected directly in units of degrees. A bridge amplifier having feedback maintains the bridge in electrical balance to avoid errors due to changes in bridge component self heating. An error detection circuit having a single control simultaneously selects upper and lower error limits centered on the desired temperature, in units of degrees. The circuit indicates whenever the actual temperature goes outside these limits. An alarm circuit indicates a temperature error or a power failure in the thermostat at the thermostat and at a remote location. This circuit utilizes an alternating current source which activates current direction-dependent indicators operating on alternate half cycles. Electrical isolation of the temperature monitoring circuitry from the circuitry controlling heating, cooling and fan equipments is provided by coupling a signal indicating a temperature error through a single electrically isolating interface to equipment selection and control circuitry at line potential.

摘要: A selectively aligned optical switching device including two adjacent translucent discs having mask segments formed on the surfaces thereof, with the first disc including a sleeve extending from the central opening thereof which is received within the central opening of the second disc. A clamping nut threadably engages the sleeve to selectively align the masking segments of the discs relative to each other. This combination of discs is clamped in concentric alignment against a timing hub which in turn is indexed by a pin relative to a rotary shaft. The mask section of the discs is then received in an optical coupling device which provides operating signals in selected coordination with the rotation of the shaft.
