The above compound has a large elastic constant ratio, steep electro-optic characteristics and a little temperature dependence in a low temperature range, and so it is useful for the manufacture of a liquid crystal display device.

摘要： A ferroelectric liquid crystal composition exhibiting a novel chiral smectic phase is disclosed. In this novel phase, a director of liquid crystal molecules may settle in a third stable state which is distinguished from known bistable states of liquid crystal molecules in a ferroelectric chiral smectic C phase. By using this composition in a display element, a dichromatic display having a quick response can be provided on a third-colored display ground by applying a controlled electric field across the composition.
