    摘要: A technique capable of easily manufacturing a projector without deteriorating too much the optical characteristics of the projector. A projector includes an illuminating optical system for emitting illumination light, an electro-optical device for modulating light from the illuminating optical system according to image information, and a projection optical system for projecting a modulated light beam flux obtained by the electro-optical device. The electro-optical device includes a single-crystal sapphire substrate having nearly a rectangular shape, and a polarizer provided on the single-crystal sapphire substrate on at least one side of a light incidence surface and a light emission surface. The single-crystal sapphire substrate includes a c-axis substantially parallel to the surface of the substrate, and the c-axis has an inclination of about 3° to about 7° with respect to an reference side selected from perpendicularly intersecting two sides of the nearly rectangular shape.

The optical component includes a glass substrate, an optical member which is connected to the glass substrate, and a connecting layer used to connect a surface of the glass substrate and a surface of the optical member together. The connecting surface of the glass substrate is defined as the surface which passes light processed by the optical component, and has a roughness of approximately 3 nm to approximately 10 nm in terms of the rms value.

    摘要: The structure of the present invention makes dark lines due to a central axis of a cross dichroic prism sufficiently inconspicuous. A stepped reflecting mirror is interposed between a second lens array and a condenser. The stepped reflecting mirror has the function of deviating the optical path of part of the partial light fluxes among a plurality of partial light fluxes passing through a plurality of small lenses aligned on the same column in lens arrays from the optical path of the other partial light fluxes. A planar transparent member may be used in place of the stepped reflecting mirror for the purpose of deviating the optical path. Another technique shifts part of rows in the lens arrays and to deviate the optical path of part of the partial light fluxes.

    摘要: A polarizing illumination device and a projection display device using the polarizing illumination device improve light utilization efficiency. Polarizing conversion elements are placed so that one of polarizing separation films of a first polarizing conversion element and one of polarizing separation films of a second polarizing conversion element are close to each other and so that effective incident areas and ineffective incident areas are alternately arranged in the x direction. The width WP in the x direction of the effective incident areas and the ineffective incident areas is set to be larger than half of the width WL in the x direction of small lenses in a second lens array. The optical axes of each of small lenses are offset from the lens centers thereof so that partial beams emerging from the small lenses in a first lens array optimally enter the effective incident areas where the partial beams should enter.

    摘要: The invention provides a dichroic prism capable of reducing displacements of projection pixels of colors caused by chromatic aberration of magnification. A dichroic prism is formed in the shape of a quadrangular prism as a whole by joining four rectangular prisms together. A red reflecting dichroic plane and a blue reflecting dichroic plane intersect to form substantially an X shape along junction surfaces of the prisms. The red reflecting dichroic plane is convex-shaped by partly changing the thickness of an adhesive layer for connecting the rectangular prisms together. Accordingly, since a red beam can be guided to a projection optical system while being enlarged, it is possible to reduce a projection image of the red beam to be projected onto a projection plane via the projection optical system. This makes it possible to reduce relative displacements of projection pixels of color beams caused by chromatic aberration of magnification.

    摘要: A projector for separating white light into three primary colors, forming images with liquid crystal light valves, mixing these images, and projecting an enlarged picture of the mixed images with a projection lens. The projector includes an optical unit having a light source, a plurality of dichroic mirrors for separating the white light into blue, green, and red beams, respective liquid crystal light valves forming images of the blue, green, and red colors. The optical unit has a chassis with a rigid center portion at which one of the liquid crystal light valves is mounted, the other two light valves being mounted symmetrically with respect thereto. An adjustment mechanism is provided for matching pixels of the second and third color valves with those of the first color valve. The red color liquid crystal light valve is disposed midway between the blue and green color liquid crystal light valves and a cooling fan is disposed below the red color liquid crystal light valve.

A superimposing lens 930 that is a component of the integrator optical system 923 as a uniform illumination optical system is arranged such that the mounting position of the superimposing lens 930 is fine-adjustable in a direction orthogonal to an optical axis 1a. By fine-adjusting the mounting position of the superimposing lens 930, the position of an illumination area B is adjusted such that the illumination area includes the image forming area A of the liquid-crystal light valve. It is not necessary to assure a wide margin around the image forming area A to cover the offset of the position of the illumination area B. As a result, the utilization of illumination light is heightened and a bright projected image results.

    摘要: A light source device includes: a light source lamp having a light-emitting tube with a discharge space and a pair of electrodes disposed in the discharge space of the light-emitting tube; a reflector extending in a substantially concave shape in section, the reflector reflecting a light beam irradiated from the light source lamp; and a sub-reflection mirror having a reflection surface that is disposed to face a reflection surface of the reflector, the sub-reflection mirror reflecting a part of the light beam irradiated from the light source lamp toward the discharge space. The light-emitting tube has a light-emitting section having the discharge space therein and sealing sections provided on both sides of the light-emitting section. The sub-reflection mirror is formed in a shape of a bowl that covers the light-emitting section of the light-emitting tube, the sub-reflection mirror having an opening for mounting the sub-reflection mirror to the light-emitting tube by allowing one of the sealing sections of the light-emitting tube to be inserted thereinto. A heat insulating member is provided to at least a part of the light-emitting section and the other one of the sealing sections of the light-emitting tube.
