Abstract: A structured phosphor device includes a frame member that includes wall regions separating multiple openings of window regions. Further, the structured phosphor device includes a phosphor material filled in each of the multiple openings with a first surface thereof being exposed to an excitation light from one or more laser sources to generate an emitted light out of each window region. Additionally, the structured phosphor device includes an anti-reflective film overlying the first surface of the phosphor material. Furthermore, the structured phosphor device includes a substrate attached to a second surface of the phosphor material in each of the multiple openings. Alternatively, the structured phosphor device includes an array of phosphor pixels dividing a plate of single-crystalline or poly-crystalline phosphor material separated by optically reflective and thermally conductive walls. A dynamic lighting system based on the arrays of phosphor pixels for single or full color image projection is also disclosed.

Abstract: Light from an array of laser light sources are spread to cover the modulating face of a DMD or other modulator. The spread may be performed, for example, by a varying curvature array of lenslets, each laser light directed at one of the lenslets. Light from neighboring and/or nearby light sources overlap at a modulator. The lasers are energized at different energy/brightness levels causing the light illuminating the modulator to itself be modulated (locally dimmed). The modulator then further modulates the locally dimmed lights to produce a desired image. A projector according to the invention may utilize, for example, a single modulator sequentially illuminated or separate primary color modulators simultaneously illuminated.

Abstract: An image projector arranged to project an image onto a display plane. The image projector comprises a processing engine, a display device, an optical element and a light source. The processing engine outputs a computer-generated diffractive pattern comprising a hologram of an image for projection and a lens function corresponding to a lens having a first optical power. The display device is arranged to display the computer-generated diffractive pattern. The optical element is disposed between the display device to the display plane. The optical element has second optical power. The light source is arranged to provide off-axis illumination of the display device in order to spatially-modulated light in accordance with the hologram and lens function. The lens function of the computer-generated diffractive pattern and the optical element collectively perform a hologram transform of the hologram such that a reconstruction of the image is formed on the display plane.

Abstract: A projection display device comprising a light source and an SBG device having a multiplicity of separate SBG elements sandwiched between transparent substrates to which transparent electrodes have been applied. The substrates function as a light guide. A least one transparent electrode comprises a plurality of independently switchable transparent electrode elements, each electrode element substantially overlaying a unique SBG element. Each SBG element encodes image information to be projected on an image surface. Light coupled into the light guide undergoes total internal reflection until diffracted out to the light guide by an activated SBG element. The SBG diffracts light out of the light guide to form an image region on an image surface when subjected to an applied voltage via said transparent electrodes.
