An ink-jet printer includes a printer housing structure, and at least one immobile ink-jet pen including a nozzle array mounted to the housing structure at a print area, the pen remaining stationary during printing operations. A two axis media drive system includes a media drive roller structure which is rotatable to move the medium in a first axis relative to the print area to position the medium relative to the pen nozzle array for a given swath, and a translating media carriage, the drive roller structure supported by the media carriage. The carriage is mounted for translating movement along a second axis transverse to the first direction, to slew the media along the second axis during printing, and a motor system for rotating the media drive roller and for translating the carriage. The motor system is a single motor/encoder system for driving the carriage and the roller. A drive transmission connects the motor system to the carriage and drive roller, and operates in a carriage drive mode or in a roller drive mode. A service station is mounted on the moving carriage, and includes a set of wiper blades and capping elements to respectively wipe and cap the pen nozzle plates.

A print head (8) is disposed opposite to the paper guide surface (11D) with a gap in between and adapted to move in parallel to the paper guide surface (11D) along the printing region (11) and beyond the printing region (11) into a retracted position (11C). A paper guide guides recording paper (5) to the printing region (11) and exposing it to the print head (8) in the printing region. The paper guide includes a guide plate (31) movable between a first position in which it is disposed opposite to the paper guide surface (11D) so as to guide recording paper (5) past the printing region (11), and a second position in which it is retracted from the printing region. A first pair of rollers is switchable between a closed state engaging each other for transporting the recording paper (5) to the printing region (11), and an open state separated from each other. A first mechanism (34-38) moves the guide plate (31) into the first position and returns it into the second position. A second mechanism (43-46) switches the rollers (41a, 41b) between the closed state and the open state, and a motor (32) drives both the first mechanism and the second mechanism so as to bring the first pair of rollers (41a, 41b) into the closed state and move the guide plate (31) from the second to the first position in a sequential order.

The paper eject apparatus of the ink-jet printer for preventing the paper from being jammed differentiates positions to be contacted between each idler roller and eject roller, and moves a carriage from the position of a protrusive idler roller to the position of the other idler rollers. Accordingly, the deflector placed at the lower part of the carriage presses the paper and enables the paper to easily be passed, thereby preventing the paper jam caused by the supply of the curled paper.
