A topside modem system provides bidirectional communication with an undersea modem commonly housed with the release to permit data generated from the instrumentation to be conveyed topside and/or send command signals to release the instrumentation package so that it can ascend to the surface for recovery, repair, or refitting. An underwater clamp-type release apparatus has a main body and a release mechanism. The main body includes a housing, a motor stand, and a speed reducing gear motor while the release mechanism includes a base plate, a pair of clamp frames, a clamp, and a rotationally controlled block. The clamp is positioned between the two clamp frames and is pivotally connected to the clamp frames with a pin installed through holes in the clamp and the clamp frames. The top end of the clamp has a concave part for clamping and holding the working piece. The rotationally controlled block includes a bottom block, and an annular wall wherein the size of the inner diameter of the annular wall can just fit to contain the second end of the pair of the clamp arms when they are closed, and wherein the annular wall includes two openings opposite each other (180-degrees apart), and the total width of the second end of the clamp arms when they are closed allows them to pass through the openings when the two clamp arms are tending to open. Therefore, when the rotationally controlled block is controlled to turn an angle of 90-degrees, the two clamp arms are aligned with the openings at the rotationally controlled block to be opened, and the working piece is released.

A battery operated system 20 responds to coded acoustic signals 15 for releasing a buoyed housing from an underwater anchor 21 to carry a retrieval line attached to a retrievable underwater object to the water surface. A novel tethering mechanism 26 is provided for attaching the housing to a line 25 tethered to the anchor and for releasing it in response to the coded acoustic signals. The tethering mechanism operates in two diverse modes. Thus the housing is released from its tether line thermally by battery power which melts an expandable wax body in a thermal actuator 36 to move an actuating member 37 through a line release stroke. However, the tether line is attached by a manually actuated latching mechanism 45, 47 provided for retethering the housing at a different location without draining battery power for resetting the latching mechanism. In one embodiment, the angle of the line leaving a latching compartment outwardly is restricted to prevent substantial changes in line orientation thereby to reduce fouling of the tether line in response to underwater currents. The tether line attaching mechanism comprises in separate embodiments either a set of line clamping cams or a latched set of levers, either of which releases the line in response to thermal movement of an actuating member.

A method of delivering to the ocean bottom and raising to the surface of a station provided with instrument packages for deep-water researches is realized by way of free submergence of the station in a water mass under the action of negative buoyancy of a ballast weight, landing of the station to the bottom, dropping of the ballast weight upon completing the bottom researches, and free emergence of the station under the action of positive buoyancy of a float module. In the course of free submergence, the station is divided into a unit comprising the instrument packages and a unit comprising the ballast weight and the float module, the unit comprising the instrument packages is directed along a path differing from the path of the free-falling unit comprising the ballast weight, thus ensuring the landing of the instrument packages at a predetermined distance from the ballast weight. After the ballast weight has been dropped the instrument packages are lifted off the ocean bottom with the float module attaining a constant ascending speed. A station for deep-water researches comprises a float module and a ballast weight connected therewith by means of a flexible link, a flexible link release controlled through a hydroacoustic channel, as well as instrument packages. The instrument packages are interconnected by means of a cantilever rod mounted on the float module for a free upward movement, fastened thereto by an elastic rope and provided with a means to create hydrodynamic resistance to the movement of the cantilever rod during submergence of the station.

The buoy may be anchored by an inflatable bag that becomes buried in the sea bed and is filled so as to be buoyant in response to actuation of the explosive charge release mechanism, or by connection through a lanyard line to an underwater structure which connection is released in response to actuation of the explosive charge release mechanism. A recall transmitter located above water actuates a plurality of sound sources, such as explosive charges which provide a series of mechanical signals in a predetermined time sequence to provide a coded recall command, and the buoy includes a receiver which receives these mechanical signals and when the properly coded recall command is received actuates the explosive charge release mechanism to release the buoy and cause it to ascend.
