One of them comprises at least a dichroic dye having a substituent containing three or more cyclic moieties, and a dual-frequency switchable nematic liquid crystal as a host liquid crystal; and another one comprises a dichroic dye having a substituent containing three or more cyclic moieties, and a liquid crystal comprising at least one nematic liquid crystal compound and at least one chiral agent. A novel liquid crystal device, comprising a pair of electrodes of which at least one is a transparent electrode and a layer between the pair of electrodes comprising one of the liquid crystal compositions, is also disclosed.

    摘要： A guest-host liquid crystal display device comprises a pair of substrates opposing each other with a space therebetween, a guest-host liquid crystal held in the space, the guest-host liquid crystal containing a dichroic dye mixture exhibiting a black color as a whole, and electrodes provided on the substrates for applying a voltage to the guest-host liquid crystal. The dichroic dye mixture comprises a bis-azo blue dye having a thienothiazole ring represented by the following chemical formula (1) and a tris-azo bluish purple dye having a benzothiazole ring represented by the following chemical formula (2): ##STR1## wherein R.sub.1 is a hydrogen or halogen atom, C.sub.n H.sub.2n+1, COC.sub.n H.sub.2n+1, OCOC.sub.n H.sub.2n+1, COOC.sub.n H.sub.2n+1, or CH.sub.2 COOC.sub.n H.sub.2n+1, wherein n is an integer from 1 to 8; each of R.sub.2 and R.sub.3 is a hydrogen atom or C.sub.n H.sub.2n+1 ; R.sub.3 may be ##STR2## or ##STR3## and a combination of R.sub.2 and R.sub.3 may form ##STR4## wherein n is an integer from 1 to 8, and m is an integer from 1 to 5; and R.sub.4 is a hydrogen or halogen atom, or C.sub.n H.sub.2n+1, wherein n is an integer from 1 to 8.

    摘要： The invention pertains to an optical recording medium comprising a homeotropically oriented liquid crystalline polymer film having a T.sub.g between 75-100.degree. C. and a T.sub.c between 110-140.degree. C. and comprising at least one dichroic dye. This homeotropic orientation along with the presence of dichroic dye makes it possible to employ a different technique for writing out and reading data. For, in this case contrast is obtained by the dichroic dye contained in the film being aligned in the same direction as the mesogenic groups of the liquid crystalline polymer. In a virgin film the mesogenic groups, and hence the dichroic dye molecules, are oriented perpendicular to the film's surface, and there is only low absorption of the incident light by these molecules. By local heating or irradiation of the film (e.g., with a laser) the homeotropic orientation is converted to an isotropic one. In the case of an isotropically written trace, the dichroic dye will likewise be isotropically oriented, resulting in a substantially higher absorption of the incident light. The films according to the invention are suitable for use in analogue and digital optical data storage, as well as, of course, combined analogue/digital data storage.
