摘要: A permanent magnet for an MRI scanner is made by removing extraneous elements from an ore containing rare earth elements to leave elements Pr and Nd therein, and then selectively stripping therefrom a portion of the element Nd as a byproduct to leave an ore residuum including both elements Pr and Nd therein. The residuum is alloyed with a transition metal to form an alloy therewith. The alloy is then formed into a rare earth permanent magnet configured for use in the MRI scanner.

摘要: A melt guide is provided for enclosing a bottom of an electroslag refining crucible containing a melt of electroslag refined metal. The guide includes an upper plate sized to engage the crucible bottom for attachment thereto, and includes an upper orifice drain therethrough for draining by gravity the melt from the crucible. A lower plate is spaced below the upper plate to define a plenum therebetween, and includes a lower orifice drain therethrough. A downspout extends through the plenum in flow communication between the upper and lower drains, and includes a middle orifice drain. A heater surrounds the downspout for heating the melt drainable therethrough. And, a coolant is circulated through the plenum for cooling the guide.

摘要: An apparatus for sorting fragments of titanium-based sponge on the basis of color is disclosed. The apparatus captures at least one color image of each fragment, inserts relevant color values from the image into an automated color-sorting system to determine the color of the fragment, and segregates the fragments according to color or range-of-color, by way of a physical segregation apparatus controlled by the color sorting system. The color sorting systems usually involve the conversion of color images from the fragments into color signals, which are in turn transformed into color values. The color images are usually represented by a pattern of pixels. The color values are automatically compared to values, which are part of a look-up table based on data sets, which embrace acceptable or rejectable color values. Comparison of color values determined for the fragments with those in the look-up table results in the acceptance or rejection of each fragment.

摘要: Systems and methods of electroslag refining of metal include the introduction of unrefined metal into an electroslag refining process in which the unrefined metal is first melted at the upper surface of the refining slag. The molten metal is refined as it passes through the molten slag. The refined metal is collected in a cold hearth apparatus having a skull of refined metal formed on the surface of the cold hearth for protecting the cold hearth from the leaching action of the refined molten metal. A cold finger bottom pour spout is formed at the bottom of the cold hearth to permit dispensing of molten refined metal from the cold hearth. The cold finger bottom pour spout comprises a plurality of copper segments having gaps. The gap between the segments is established and maintained by insulation structure and sealing structure positioned in each gap.

摘要: A method calibrating a thermal print head printer having fixed imaging elements so that consistent high resolution output may be achieved includes a means for measuring a common characteristic of each fixed imaging element and storing the values so that print head compensation may occur during the printing process one scan line at a time. Error diffusion, either across the thermal print head, down-web, or both, ensures that appropriate drive level are supplied to each fixed imaging element regardless of inherent differences in the common characteristics of the fixed imaging elements, to achieve consistent tonal image quality. In a preferred embodiment, the fixed imaging elements are thin film electrical resistive elements and the common characteristic is the electrical resistance of the thin film resistor elements.
