摘要:
A golf ball is provided that has improved aerodynamic efficiency, resulting in increased flight distance for golfers of all swing speeds, and more particularly for golfers possessing very high swing speeds, such as those who can launch the balls at an initial speed greater than 160 miles per hour and more particularly at initial ball speed of about 170 miles per hour or higher. The golf ball of the present invention combines lower dimple count with multiple dimple sizes to provide higher dimple coverage and improved aerodynamic characteristics.

Provided herein is a golf ball that includes a generally spherical surface and an array of dimples formed on the surface. The undimpled portion of the spherical surface is the land area. At least one of the dimples includes a perimeter, a base, and a sidewall connecting the perimeter to the base. The sidewall forms an edge angle with the ball surface. The edge angle at a particular point on the perimeter is proportional to width of the land area adjacent to the point. Where the land area width is wide, the edge angle is high. Similarly, where the land area width is narrow, the edge angle is low. As the width of the land area in non-tessellated dimple patterns is determined by the position of the neighboring dimples, the edge angle varies cyclically around the perimeter, with the number of cycles corresponding to the number of neighboring dimples.

A golf ball includes an outer spherical surface and a plurality of dimples formed thereon. In accordance to one aspect of the invention, the dimples have a polygonal perimeter and a concave depression. The concave depression satisfies only two of the following conditions: a substantially circular depression perimeter, a substantially spherical shape, and the depression contacting the perimeter of the dimple. In accordance to another aspect of the invention, one or more sides of the polygonal perimeter may be non-linear or curved. The dimples of the present invention may fill the ball's entire outer surface, or the dimples may occupy a predetermined pattern on the ball. The predetermined pattern may also include one or more channels or raised beads on the surface of the ball.

A multi-lobed golf ball dimple is provided. The dimple comprises a plurality of lobes positioned radially around the center of the dimple. Each lobe comprises a first curved profile extending from the circumferential segment toward the center of the dimple and the first curved profile of each lobe abuts each other in an uninterrupted manner. The curvature of the circumferential segments can be defined by a ratio of an inside radius to an outside radius. The multi-lobed dimples are preferably arranged in a hexagonal array and are preferably arranged in an icosahedron pattern.

A method of making molds for the production of golf balls is disclosed. A hob is made having an imperfectly spherical arcuate surface that is composed of at least two different arcs in continuous arrangement to each other. A mold half is formed using the hob so that the imperfectly spherical hob creates an imperfectly spherical golf ball cavity within the mold half. When used to make golf balls, the imperfectly spherical cavity results in golf balls having a higher degree of sphericity than golf balls made by spherical hobs and mold half cavities.

A method and a system for measuring the spin decay rate of a golf ball. The system includes an indoor testing area, a launching device, and a measuring device positioned at a final position along the ball's flight path. When the ball is launched by the launching device, the measuring device measures the spin rate and speed at the final position. Then, the launching device can launch the ball at the speed and spin rate of the final position and a new final speed and spin rate are measured again. The spin rate difference from launching to the final position is used to determine the spin decay rate. By using discrete spin decay rate measurements, the spin decay rate profile of a golf ball during its entire flight can be measured in the indoor area.

In accordance with the present invention, a golf ball includes an outer surface and a plurality of dimples formed thereon. At least one of the dimples is a concentric ring dimple. Each concentric ring dimple includes a central depression, and at least one annular depression that concentrically surrounds the central depression. A land ring extends between the central depression and the annular depression. When the concentric ring dimple includes additional annular depressions, land rings extend between the adjacent annular depressions. The concentric ring dimples provide additional dimple circumference over conventional dimples that occupy the same space, thereby improving the aerodynamic performance of the golf ball.

A golf ball having a spherical surface with a plurality of dimples formed therein, the spherical surface comprising eight spherical triangles delineated by three great circle parting lines not intersecting any dimples, said parting lines being formed by projecting the edges of an inscribed regular octahedron onto said spherical surface, each of said triangles having dimples located within such parting lines such thata) the division of each triangle by three division lines angularly spaced at 120 degrees from one another and originating at the center of each triangle forms three spherical guadrilaterals each having identical dimple patterns; andb) each of said patterns is not bilaterally symmetrical across any apex line extending from the center of the triangle to an apex of the triangle.

A golf ball is provided with evenly and uniformly distributed dimples so that six great circle paths on the surface of the golf ball do not intersect any dimples. The spherical surface of the golf ball is divided into 20 identical spherical triangles corresponding to the faces of a regular icosahedron. Each of the 20 triangles is further subdivided into four smaller triangles consisting of a central triangle and three apical triangles by connecting the midpoints of each of the 20 triangles along great circle paths. The dimples are arranged so that the dimples do not intersect the sides of any of the central triangles.
