A gas generator for vehicle occupant restraint systems comprises an elongated housing having gas outlet openings, a sealed, rupturable gas generant cartridge positioned within the housing, and pyrotechnic gas generant contained in the cartridge. An igniter capsule mounted at one end of the housing has an exit opening juxtaposed the sealed gas generant cartridge. The igniter capsule contains ignitor material, and an initiator and initiator charge. The initiator ignites the ignitor material which expels a fireball of hot combustion products from the opening, capsules exit rupturing the sealed cartridge and igniting the gas generant charge to produce gas for inflating an air bag. A rupturable seal is provided over the exit opening of the ignitor capsule and a nozzle directs hot combustion products to the gas generant cartridge. The initiator charge is auto ignitor material for operating the gas generator if it is exposed to fire. The ignitor capsule comprises overlapping metal parts, and is mounted as a closure of the elongated housing. The gas generant cartridge is placed in the housing surrounded by filtering and cooling screens. One end of the rupturable gas generant cartridge adjacent the ignitor capsule outlet is scored for rupturing inwardly to admit the ignitor fireball. The cartridge contains wraps of filter screen to provide structural rigidity, and additional filter and cooling materials surround the cartridge.

In order to evenly inflate an airbag, a diffuser sheet is positioned over the inflator to distribute the gases which exit one end of the inflator. The diffuser sheet serves a second function of securing the inflator in the canister. It does so by means of screws which extend through the canister and into threaded engagement with the diffuser sheet, placing it in tension when the screws are tightened.

A fastener is provided using an H-rib head which slides into place in a channel molded on a detachable door mounted on a vehicular instrument panel covering an inflatable airbag. The H-rib fastener has a mounting shank extending downward therefrom which is adapted to fit in a hole in a mounting substrate on the instrument panel. A resilient clip is mounted on the mounting shank of the H-rib for insertion into one of the holes in the mounting substrate for locking the fastener in place in the mounting substrate. Upon deployment of the airbag, the door is pushed out of the dashboard surface with the H-shaped connector detaching from the channel in the door. Accordingly, only a low lying channel remains on the backside of the door, thereby minimizing the potential of a snagged airbag. The fastener can also be released simply by pressing the clip fastener together to release the H-rib fastener from the instrument panel to gain access to the airbag assembly in order to service the airbag assembly if desired.

A passenger side air bag exhibits controlled deployment of a vertically elongated frontal surface prior to full inflation. The air bag includes a depending lobe extending downwardly from the inlet opening secured to an inflator module mounted in a dashboard. A portion of the front panel of the air bag is releasably secured, such as by breakaway stitching, to a portion of the rear of the depending lobe, below the inlet opening. Outward deployment of the air bag in an elongated column is prevented by the stitching, and a broad front surface develops early in the deployment and inflation process. The breakaway stitching releases part way through the deployment and inflation process, and the front surface then fills out to full inflation. Higher stitch density in the area of stitching which first releases contributes to controlled deployment.

A device is provided for increasing the surface area of the gas generant used in an automotive safety air bag module. Depending on crash conditions, the surface area of the gas generant is increased by shattering the gas generant wafers. One embodiment utilizes a squib having a high brisant zone which upon activation shatters the gas generant wafers. Alternatively, a dual function squib is used which can produce mechanical forces which force a breaking object to impact on the gas generating wafers thereby shattering them and increasing the surface area of the gas generant.
