Abstract: An additive manufacturing method including building an object layer-by-layer by, repeatedly, providing a layer of material on build platform and scanning a beam across the layer to consolidate material. A plurality of supports may be provided for supporting object during build. Each support may include main body attached to the object by 2-dimensional pattern of frangible structures. The method may further include applying input force to main body to displace main body to break the frangible structures. Also relates to a support structure that may be used in this method. The support structure may include plurality of supports for supporting the object, each support including main body attached to object by a 2-dimensional pattern of frangible structures. The supports may be arranged such that main bodies define a gap therebetween into which at least one of main bodies can be displaced by an input force to break the frangible structures.

Abstract: A rotation detection apparatus, including: a beam source for emitting a beam of polarised light; a decohering arrangement for eliminating or reducing the degree of coherence between first and second independent polarisation components of the polarised light to produce a decohered beam of polarised light; a detector for outputting a signal in dependence on the intensity of light incident thereupon, the detector arranged so that the decohered beam of polarised light is incident upon it; a polariser for location in the path of the decohered beam of polarised light such that rotation of the polariser relative to the decohered beam of polarised light results in a variation of the intensity of light incident upon the detector from the beam source and a corresponding variation in the signal output from the detector; and a processor for detecting the relative rotation based on the variation of the signal output from the detector.

Abstract: A non-contact method of inspecting the topography of an area of an object via analysis of the phase of a pattern projected on the object. The method includes taking a first image of the object, obtained from a first perspective, on which an optical pattern is projected, and taking a second image of the object, obtained from a second perspective, on which an optical pattern is projected but in which the optical pattern, as it falls on the object, in the second image differs to that in the first image. The method further includes determining data describing the topography of at least a region of the object based on phase data relating to the phase of at least a region of the optical pattern as imaged in the first image. Phase data obtained from a corresponding region of the object as imaged in the second image is used to resolve any ambiguity in the phase or topography data obtained from the first image.

Abstract: The present invention relates to an encoder readhead. The readhead includes a housing having an opening for capturing an encoder scale including an elongate rod having a substantially circular cross-section, the opening defining an axial direction along which a captured encoder scale can slide back and forth. A scale reader, which may include an array of Hall sensors, is provided for reading a portion of an encoder scale located in the opening. The housing includes an access portion that allows the encoder scale to be inserted into, and/or removed from, the opening by a relative movement between the housing and the encoder scale in a direction other than the axial direction.

Abstract: A scanning device for a position encoder is provided that comprises a plurality of sensor elements for generating a plurality of sensor signals. A summation unit is also provided for generating at least a first summation signal and a second summation signal that provide information on the relative alignment of the scanning device and an associated scale. The first summation signal is generated from a first subset of the plurality of sensor signals and the second summation signal is generated from a second subset of the plurality of sensor signals. The plurality of sensor elements are substantially evenly spaced apart from one another N and sensor elements are provided per period of an associated scale, wherein N is an integer value and a multiple of three and four. In this manner, the third harmonic contribution to the summation signals is suppressed.

Abstract: A method of operating coordinate positioning apparatus having a measurement probe includes taking a first part in a series of parts, at least a first reference geometrical property associated with one or more features of the first part being known and using the coordinate positioning apparatus to measure the one or more features of the first part and determining a first measured geometrical property corresponding to the first reference geometrical property. A first property correction value is then determined describing a difference between the first reference and the first measured geometrical properties. The coordinate positioning apparatus is then used to measure the one or more features of one or more further parts in the series of parts and, for each further part, a further measured geometrical property is determined corresponding to the first reference geometrical property. The first property correction value is then applied to each further measured geometrical property.

Abstract: A method of operating a coordinate positioning apparatus having a surface sensor that is rotatable about at least a first axis. The method comprises obtaining a first measurement with the surface sensor at a first angular orientation and obtaining a at least a second measurement with the surface sensor at a second angular orientation. The first and second angular orientations are different to each other such that any offset of the surface sensor from an expected position will have at least a partially opposing affect on the first and second measurements. The method then compensates and/or establishes for the offset using the first and second measurements.
