    摘要: A process and apparatus for edging and polishing an ophthalmic lens is provided whereby an edge of a polycarbonate ophthalmic lens is polished to a high luster finish substantially equal to the finish on the optical surface of the lens. The process allows the use of one machine for processing of all common ophthalmic lens materials such as polycarbonate, CR 39 or glass, whereby the lens may be edged and polished with one machine. The process of the invention comprises the steps of roughing a polycarbonate lens substantially without coolant and passing a polishing wheel of the present invention over the surface of the lens substantially without coolant and then passing the polishing wheel over the surface of the lens with the use of coolant for at least one pass over the portion of the lens edge to be polished. A single abrasive wheel is used for machine polishing of the lens edge. The wheel is an impregnated wheel of from about 2 to about 60 micron diamond hardness abrasive particles in a concentration of from about 10 to about 200 concentration. The wheel may be used for conventional wet finishing of lens, blank materials other than polycarbonates.

A method of making an abrasive article is also provided which comprises providing a web having an abrasive layer on one side and a layer of pressure sensitive adhesive on an opposite side and a protective liner covering the layer of pressure sensitive adhesive, providing a strip of lift material having a region bearing an adhesive layer and a non-adhesive region, applying the strip to the liner of the web, and cutting the web and strip to form the abrasive article such that the liner of the abrasive material has a lift flap which does not extend beyond the perimeter of the liner and has a free portion accessible to finger grip.

A replacement cutting tool is gauged in an off-machine gauging mechanism while the machine is able to continue an on-going lens cutting operation. A stop surface of the replacement tool is adjusted in the gauging mechanism in order to reset the cutting edge, whereby subsequent insertion of the replacement tool in the machine assures that the cutting edge will be located in a predetermined reference plane of the machine.

    摘要: A rosette shaped polishing pad includes a tough, flexible substrate, which is coated on one side with a layer of pressure sensitive adhesive for securing the pad to a polishing lap or the like, and on its opposite side with a flexible, water soluble matrix containing polishing particles such as cerium oxide, zirconium oxide, iron oxide, or the like, having a particle size in the range of approximately 0.5 to 15 microns. The polishing layer is produced by mixing a water soluble polyalkylene oxide/phenolic complex with an acrylic latex, and an alcohol slurry containing polishing particles in the form of, for example, cerium oxide particles. In use, water at any desired flow rate is applied to the interface between the lens which is being polished and the layer of polishing material on the pad. During the polishing operation the polyalkylene oxide/phenolic/acrylic binder or matrix slowly dissolves to release the polishing particles in a controlled manner thus providing a glass removal rate necessary to achieve an optical quality polished surface.
