摘要:
An apparatus and method are disclosed for accurately determining viscosity of Newtonian and non-Newtonian fluids using a controlled needle viscometer. The controlled needle viscometer includes a vertical sample insert tube filled with the liquid of which the viscosity is to be determined. Using a needle guide at the top of the sample insert tube, a body having a known density is made to fall through the liquid in the sample insert tube. Using the time that the controlled needle takes to fall between two known distance marks or transducers, the velocity of the needle falling through the liquid is determined. Thus, the viscosity can be calculated by using the velocity of a controlled needle. In the method, viscosity, shear rate and shear stress can be calculated according to a modified power law model.

The present invention relates to a method for determining the density of a liquid using a falling needle viscometer. The viscometer includes a vertical cylinder which is filled with the liquid the density of which is to be determined. Using a funnel at the top of the cylinder, a first needle having a known density is allowed to fall through the liquid in the cylinder. The time that the needle falls between two marks, or transducers, spaced on the cylinder a known distance is measured from which the velocity of the needle through the liquid is calculated. Then a second needle having the same dimensions as the first and a known density different from that of the first needle is allowed to fall through the liquid. The time that the second needle falls between the two marks on the cylinder or transducers is measured and the velocity of the second needle through the liquid is calculated. Using the densities of the two needles and the velocities of the needles through the Newtonian liquid the density of the liquid is calculated using disclosed equations. Using the densities three needles and the velocities of the needles through the non-Newtonian liquid, the density of the liquid is calculated using the disclosed equations.

A viscosimeter of the kind wherein a capillary tube containing a fluid, the viscosity of which is to be measured, and a metal ball is supported so that the ball will gravitate from the top of the tube to the bottom and a magnet is used to periodically raise the ball in the capillary and release it. The viscosity is determined by the rate of descent of the ball in the capillary tube.

An arrangment for measuring the viscosity of a fluid includes a heated, vertical container which receives a vessel filled with the fluid to undergo a viscosity determination. A pair of vertically spaced sensors are mounted in the peripheral wall of the container and are connected with an evaluating mechanism which includes a timer and a computer. The sensors are also connected with a temperature regulating mechanism which regulates the temperature of the fluid by controlling heating of the container. In operation, the fluid is heated on a predetermined temperature. A standard sphere is then permitted to fall through the fluid. When the sphere passes the uppermost sensor, the latter generates an impulse which activates the timer. Similarly, an impulse deactivating the timer is generated when the sphere passes the lowermost sensor. The time required for the sphere to travel between the sensors is fed into the computer which then calculates the viscosity of the fluid from a relationship between viscosity and time. The calculated viscosity may be displayed on a digital indicator. The arrangement is simple to operate and eliminates the need for manual observations to determine the time required for the standard sphere to travel a predetermined distance through the fluid.

A viscosity measuring apparatus of the type in which a movable body element is caused to move within the fluid to be measured, the time period required to move the body a predetermined distance representing an index of the viscosity. A movable driven body element, at least partially made of a magnetic material, has a second movable magnetic driver element magnetically coupled thereto but isolated from the fluid. The driver element is actuated by appropriate means, such as a pneumatic actuation system, which places such elements in a predetermined position at which point they are released and caused to move to a second predetermined position under a substantially constant force, the time required to move between such positions thereby representing a measure of the viscosity of the fluid in which the drive element moves.
