Time consuming calibration of a multi-element x-ray detector for an x-ray computed tomography machine that has multi-sample rate capabilities is reduced by determining through the use of air-scans, a scalar relationship between sensitivity of detector elements as a function of sampling rate. This scalar relationship is in vector form and may be applied to independently obtain calibration vectors at a base scan rate to provide effective calibration vectors at a variety of scan rates without the need for time consuming daily calibration scans at each of those sample rates.

A method and apparatus for use with a volumetric computed tomography (CT) scanning system. In accordance with the present invention, the volumetric CT scanning system utilizes an area detector to acquire projection data. The acquired projection data is stored in memory. The projection data corresponding to groups of pixels of the detector is then rebinned to thereby reduce the amount of projection data that will be utilized in performing an initial volumetric reconstruction of the image. The reconstructed image may then be processed to identify particular regions of interest, such as a pathology. If a particular region of interest is identified, all of the projection data corresponding to the region is then used to retrospectively reconstruct a high resolution image of the region of interest. The retrospectively reconstructed high resolution image can then be processed and analyzed to further evaluate the region of interest.

In one embodiment, the present invention is a method for reconstructing a scanned CT image that includes steps of: acquiring projection data of an object utilizing a flat-panel detector; and filtering and backprojecting the projection data, without radially interpolating, to reconstruct a three-dimensional image of the object. This embodiment provides direct fan-parallel, three-dimensional reconstruction of computed tomographic images without loss of resolution associated with radial interpolation, while retaining imaging quality and backprojection speed gains associated with parallel reconstruction.

The present invention comprises a system and method for producing images of an object utilizing an x-ray computed tomography (CT) system. Detector elements within the CT system provide raw projection data representing the attenuated x-rays. A data corrector modifies the raw projection data to account for errors to produce corrected projection data. A high order interpolator operates on the corrected projection data to provide estimated projection data at the exact spatial position of the desired image. The high order interpolator utilizes a cubic spline function to determine the estimated projection data. The estimated projection data are used by an image reconstructor to perform high speed image reconstruction.

To compensate for increased noise near the edge of a field of view, for example, a z-smoothing filter applies an increased amount of smoothing to the data as a distance from an isochannel increases. A channel dependent primary speed/afterglow correction can also be used to provide smoothing.
