The common brush, low-speed drive brush, and high-speed drive brush are spaced apart and arranged in the circumferential direction of the rotation shaft and each have a width in the circumferential direction of the rotation shaft. The number of teeth is the same as the number of segments. When P represents the number of magnetic pole portions of the magnet and S represents the number of teeth, (2S/P) is an odd number. The width of each brush and the location of the brush in the circumferential direction are set so that the three types of brushes, which are the common brush, the low-speed drive brush, and the high-speed drive brush, all do not simultaneously short-circuit two of the segments that are adjacent to each other in the circumferential direction.

A brush system for providing an electric connection to a rotating commutator wheel of an electric machine is disclosed. The brush system has a switched brush selectively switchable between an engaged position and a disengaged position and a switch connected to the switched brush and formed of a shape-memory-alloy. The switch attains an extended state at a first temperature and attaining a retracted state at a second temperature, for switching the switched brush alternately to the respective engaged position and the respective disengaged position. The switch includes a temperature conditioner for varying a temperature at the switch between the first temperature and the second temperature. The temperature condition may be an electric network wherein the internal resistance of the switch allows for heating of the switch to the second temperature.

A drive mechanism for windshield wiper systems on motor vehicles comprises a d.c. motor to be driven in at least two different speeds of operation. The motor includes a collector, a first and a second carbon brush substantially resting against the collector diametrically opposite each other, and a third carbon brush which rests against the collector between the first and the second carbon brush. The third carbon brush is set off at a particular angle relative to the second carbon brush. When the d.c. motor is operated in the first speed of operation the first and the second carbon brush is connected to the voltage source and when the d.c. motor is operated in the second speed of operation the first and the third carbon brush is connected to a voltage source. In order to achieve a substantial starting torque in the speed of the second speed of operation a fourth carbon brush is provided which relative to the third carbon brush rests against the collector at the other side of the connecting line between first and second carbon brush and may be connected to the voltage source in parallel to and jointly with the third carbon brush.

A dynamoelectric machine having a multiple of three poles and a corresponding multiple of three brushes is disclosed. Each of the poles are wound poles, two of each group of three poles being excited with a constant excitation during normal operation, the third of each group of poles being a control pole, excited so as to produce a flux that both varies in magnitude and reverses in polarity. With an input voltage connected to first and second brushes of each group of three, an output voltage may be derived from first and third brushes in a magnitude determined by the polarity and intensity of the field of the control pole. The machine is also adapted to provide mechanical output power from its rotating shaft, and also to accept input power from its rotating shaft. The output voltage obtainable may be varied between zero and the value of the input voltage, and also increased above the input voltage, and decreased below zero, reversing polarity. Means are also disclosed for providing regenerative braking of a motor driven by the output voltage of the machine and returning power to a battery power supply without increasing shaft speed of the machine, by augmenting the flux of a pole to increase the input voltage while maintaining the output voltage constant.
