A process of preparing aqueous dispersions of multi-component film-forming polymer particles, suitable for use in a cathodic electrodeposition process. The disperse particles, which may be thermoplastic or thermosetting, are derived from mixtures of pre-formed polymer and addition polymer formed in situ. The process is carried out at a pH below 10 and in the presence of a selected cationic surface active agent which stabilizes the dispersion below pH 10 but renders it unstable at a pH of 10-11.

The present invention relates to N-methylol amide-containing resinous compositions and the methods of preparing them. Aqueous dispersions of the instant resinous composition containing N-methylol amides in amounts sufficient to impart self-curing at comparatively low temperatures are disclosed. The aqueous dispersions of the instant resinous compositions are useful as coating compositions; they are particularly suited to electrodeposition.

A method for the preparation of prepregs comprisesI. impregnating a fibrous reinforcing material with a liquid composition containing an epoxide resin, a photopolymerizable compound, and with a heat-activated curing agent for epoxide resins, andIi. in the absence of a substance which gives rise to a substantial degree of photoinduced polymerization through consumption of epoxide groups, exposing the impregnated material to actinic radiation such that the composition solidifies due to photopolymerization of the said photopolymerizable compound while the epoxide resin remains substantially in the thermosettable state.Preferably the liquid composition also contains a dual-functional substance which has in the same molecule both an epoxide group and a dissimilar group through which the substance can be photopolymerized. The prepreg, optionally after shaping and/or stacking, is heated to cure the epoxide resin and, if used, the photopolymerized dual-functional substance.

A homogeneous mixture of a polyanhydride and a polyepoxide is prepared by the copolymerization of an olefinically unsaturated monomer capable of polymerization by free-radical means with an olefinically unsaturated monoanhydride and an olefinically saturated polyanhydride in the presence of a polyepoxide and an anhydride accelerator without substantial anhydride-epoxide cross-linking. As an example, reinforcing glass fibers are impregnated with a solution of styrene, maleic anhydride, stryene-maleic anhydride copolymer, a diglycidyl ether of bisphenol A and 1-methylimidazole and the resin is thickened in situ by copolymerization of the styrene, maleic anhydride and styrene-maleic anhydride copolymer to form a moldable, homogeneous mixture of styrene-maleic anhydride copolymer, diglycidyl ether of bisphenol A, 1-methylimidazole and reinforcing glass fibers.
