Abstract: A method for differentiator-based compression of digital data includes (a) multiplying a tap-weight vector by an original data vector to generate a predicted signal, the original data vector comprising N sequential samples of an original signal, N being an integer greater than or equal to one, (b) using a subtraction module, subtracting the predicted signal from a sample of the original signal to obtain an error signal, (c) using a quantization module, quantizing the error signal to obtain a quantized error signal, and (d) updating the tap-weight vector according to changing statistical properties of the original signal.

Abstract: An optical access network includes an optical hub having at least one processor, and a plurality of optical fiber strands. Each optical fiber strand has a first strand end connected to the optical hub. The network further includes a plurality of nodes connected to at least one segment of a first fiber strand of the plurality of optical fiber strands. Each node is sequentially disposed at respective locations along the first fiber strand at different differences from the optical hub, respectively. The network further includes a plurality of end-points. Each end-point includes a receiver. Each respective receiver (i) has a different optical signal-to-noise ratio (OSNR) from the other receivers, (ii) is operably coupled with at least one node of the plurality of nodes, and (iii) is configured to receive the same optical wavelength signal from the first fiber strand as received by the other receivers.

Abstract: An edge wavelength-switching system includes an optical switch and a wavelength selective switch. The optical switch includes a west hub-side port, an east hub-side port, a west local-side port, and an east local-side port. The wavelength selective switch includes (i) a multiplexed port optically coupled to the west local-side port and (ii) a bypass port optically coupled to the east local-side port, and (iii) a plurality of demultiplexed ports. An optical network includes a network hub including an M-by-N1 wavelength-selective switch, N1>M≥1, a first network node, and a second network node. Each of the first and second network nodes includes a respective edge wavelength-switching system. The network hub, the first network node, and the second network node are optically coupled.

Abstract: A communication network includes an optical hub having a first coherent optics transceiver, a fiber node having a second coherent optics transceiver, an optical transport medium operably coupling the first coherent optics transceiver to the second coherent optics transceiver, a first optical circulator disposed at the optical hub, and a second optical circulator disposed at the fiber node. The first coherent optics transceiver is configured to (i) transmit a downstream optical signal at a first wavelength, and (ii) receive an upstream optical signal at the first wavelength. The second coherent optics transceiver is configured to (i) receive the downstream optical signal from the first coherent optics transceiver at the first wavelength, and (ii) transmit the upstream optical signal at the first wavelength. The first and second optical circulators are configured to separate the downstream optical signal from the upstream optical signal.

Abstract: A method for virtually performing delta-sigma digitization is provided. The method is performed on a series of digital samples output from a communication stack of a communication network. The method includes steps of obtaining a delta-sigma digitization sampling frequency for the output series of digital samples, calculating an oversampling ratio for the output series of digital samples, interpolating the output series of digital samples at a rate equivalent to the oversampling ratio, and quantizing the interpolated series of digital samples to plurality of discrete predetermined levels.
