A photosensitive member having at least two electrically operative layers is disclosed. The first layer comprises a photoconductive layer which is capable of photogenerating holes and injecting photogenerated holes into a contiguous charge transport layer. The charge transport layer comprises a polycarbonate resin containing from about 25 to about 75 percent by weight of one or more of a compound having the general formula: ##STR1## wherein R.sub.1, R.sub.2, R.sub.3 and R.sub.4 are selected from the group consisting of hydrogen, an ortho, meta or para alkyl group having from 1 to about 4 carbon atoms, an ortho, meta or para halogen atom, a para phenyl group and combinations thereof.

The materials are produced through a sol-gel process wherein a hybrid material, which may be obtained through hydrolysis and condensation, includes an inorganic glassy network, a flexible organic subunit and a functional subunit. The latter two subunits may be unitary. The materials can be easily coated for fabricating electrophotographic imaging members and the like.

Process for preparation of 2-anthryl and substituted 2-anthryl functional monomers and polymers. In the process for preparation of these monomers, an anthracenic reactant of the formula: ##STR1## wherein X and Y are independently selected from hydrogen, chlorine, bromine, alkyl of 1 to 4 carbon atoms or phenylIs acylated in nitrobenzene under conditions which favor reaction at the two position. The resulting acylated product can then be (a) reacted with an alkylidenephosphorane (Wittig synthesis) or (b) reduced to the corresponding alcohol. Subsequent to such reduction, this alcohol can undergo further modification at the hydroxyl function to form a polymerizable addition monomer. Through the proper selection of the relative concentration of reactants and control over processing conditions, it is possible not only to prepare such monomers in high yields but also upon polymerization of such monomers, to obtain high molecular weight 2-anthryl and substituted 2-anthryl functional polymers (molecular weight of at least 10.sup.4). Polymers of such high molecular weight can readily be formed without the use of binders into self-supporting films. Such films are intrinsically photoconductive in the ultraviolet region of the electromagnetic spectrum and have good transport capabilities for charge carriers of both polarities.

Process for preparation of 2-anthryl and substituted 2-anthryl functional monomers and polymers. In the process for preparation of these monomers, an anthracenic reactant of the formula: ##STR1## wherein X and Y are independently selected from hydrogen, chlorine, bromine, alkyl of 1 to 4 carbon atoms or phenylIs acylated in nitrobenzene under conditions which favor reaction at the two position. The resulting acylated product can then be (a) reacted with an alkylidenephosphorane (Wittig synthesis) or (b) reduced to the corresponding alcohol. Subsequent to such reduction, this alcohol can undergo further modification at the hydroxyl function to form a polymerizable addition monomer. Through the proper selection of the relative concentration of reactants and control over processing conditions, it is possible not only to prepare such monomers in high yields but also upon polymerization of such monomers, to obtain high molecular weight 2-anthryl and substituted 2-anthryl functional polymers (molecular weight of at least 10.sup.4). Polymers of such high molecular weight can readily be formed without the use of binders into self-supporting films. Such films are intrinsically photoconductive in the ultraviolet region of the electromagnetic spectrum and have good transport capabilities for charge carriers of both polarities.

The first charge transport layer is formed from a first CTL formulation comprising an aromatic monoamine and a first polymeric film forming binder material. The second charge transport layer is formed from a second CTL formulation comprising aromatic diamine and a second polymeric film forming binder material. The imaging member has gained improved properties such as removal of anti-curl layer, desirable structural flatness, electrical properties, mechanical robustness, flexibility, longevity, and copy image qualities over extended use, among others.
