Abstract: A system includes a display. The display includes an array of LEDs covered by a transparent material. The array of LEDs includes a plurality of first, second, third, and fourth LEDs respectively configured to emit red, green, blue, and violet light. The red, green, and blue light from the first, second, and third LEDs is visible to human eye. Violet light from the fourth LEDs is invisible to human eye. The system includes a photocatalytic coating disposed on the transparent material. The photocatalytic coating includes a photo-catalyst responsive to ultraviolet radiation present in sunlight and to the violet light emitted by the fourth LEDs in the array of LEDs. The system includes a controller configured to selectively turn on the fourth LEDs to activate the photo-catalyst in the photocatalytic coating disposed on the transparent material.

Abstract: A driver alert system for an automobile includes a global positioning system adapted to monitor a location of an automobile, and a processor adapted to receive data from the global positioning system, receive data of historical wildlife position and migration habits within a pre-determined range from the automobile, calculate a distance from the automobile to an area of wildlife activity as indicated by the data of historical wildlife position and migration habits within the pre-determined range from the automobile, and provide an alert to a driver of the automobile when the data of historical wildlife position and migration habits indicates wildlife movement within the pre-determined range of the automobile and the automobile is within a triggering distance of such wildlife movement.

Abstract: A method includes detecting at least one remote vehicle that is within a predetermined distance from the host vehicle, detecting that the light of the remote vehicle that is on, determining a luminous intensity of a light beam emitted by the light of at least one remote vehicle that is within the predetermined distance from the host vehicle, comparing the luminous intensity of the light beam emitted by the light of at least one remote vehicle to a predetermined threshold to determine whether the luminous intensity of the light beam emitted by the light is greater than the predetermined threshold in response to determining the luminous intensity of the light of at least one remote vehicle that is within the predetermined distance from the host vehicle, and dimming at least a portion of the windshield of the host vehicle.

Abstract: A head up display (HUD) system includes: a laser; a liquid crystal on silicon (LCoS) panel configured to modulate light output by the laser; a modulator control module configured to, during each predetermined period: apply power to the LCoS panel for a first predetermined ON period; and disconnect the LCoS panel from power for a remainder of the predetermined period; and a laser control module configured to, during each predetermined period: when a temperature of the LCoS panel is less than a predetermined temperature: apply power to the laser for a second predetermined ON period while power is applied to the LCoS panel and after the modulator control module begins applying power to the LCoS panel, where the second predetermined ON period is less than the first predetermined ON period; and disconnect the laser from power for the remainder of the predetermined period.

Abstract: A holographic display system for a motor vehicle includes a light source for generating a beam of coherent light and a spatial light modulator (SLM) having a two-dimensional pixel array. The two-dimensional pixel array modulates the beam of coherent light for generating a plurality of subframes, with each subframe being associated with one of a plurality of partial fields of view. The system further includes a scanner for directing the subframes onto associated sections of a display surface. The system further includes a computer having a memory including instructions, such that a processor is programmed to control the two-dimensional pixel array of the SLM for generating the subframes. The processor is further programmed to control the scanner for directing the subframes onto associated sections of the display surface and displaying a reconstructed image within a full field of view, which includes each of the partial fields of view.

Abstract: A holographic display system is provided and includes a light source, a holographic projector, and a polarizer. The light source is configured to generate a first light beam. The holographic projector includes a spatial light modulator configured to adjust phases of respective portions of the first light beam to generate a phase hologram beam. The phase hologram beam comprises a first polarization and a second polarization. The polarizer is configured to filter out light having the first polarization from the phase hologram beam to provide at least a portion of a filtered phase hologram beam at a diffuser to generate a holographic image, wherein the filtered phase hologram beam includes light with the second polarization and does not include light with the first polarization.

Abstract: A speckle reduction system is provided and includes a speckle reduction component and a control module. The speckle reduction component includes electrode layers and a liquid crystal layer. The liquid crystal layer is disposed between the electrode layers and configured to receive light from a coherent light source. The control module is configured to (i) supply a first voltage signal having a first voltage to the electrode layers to provide a first speckle pattern output, and (ii) supply a second voltage signal having a second voltage to the electrode layers to provide a second speckle pattern output, wherein the first voltage and the second voltage are greater than zero. The control module is configured to transition between providing the first voltage signal and the second voltage signal in less than at least one of half an integration time of a human eye or 8 milliseconds.

Abstract: A head-up display (HUD) system for a vehicle comprises a windshield, a projector adapted to project an image onto an inner surface of the windshield, a HUD glare trap lens positioned between the projector and the windshield, the HUD glare trap lens adapted to allow the projected image to pass through the HUD glare trap lens to the inner surface of the windshield, and to reflect sunlight that passes through the windshield to the HUD glare trap lens, and a light trap adapted to deflect sunlight that passes through the windshield and is reflected by the HUD glare trap lens, to prevent the reflected sunlight from interfering with the HUD image projected onto the windshield.
