Abstract: Fountain apparatus in which a valve (40B) in the liquid circulating system of a fountain is adapted to control liquid flow to one or more nozzles (73, 74) to effect movement and interaction of the streams dispersed therefrom to produce fountain displays. The valve includes a valve body having two or more outlets (71A, 71B, 72A, 72B), each connected by a conduit (71C, 71D, 71E, 71F) to deliver liquid to one or more single entry or multiple entry nozzles (73, 74), and a hollow valve element (46A) provided with two or more lateral openings (67-69) and an inlet port (66) connected to receive the circulating fountain liquid for transmission through said lateral openings. Reversible drive motors (56, 65) in drive connection with the valve element are adapted to impart linear axial movement and reversible axial rotation of the valve element to periodically position the valve element lateral openings in communication with the valve outlets to control the distribution of liquid to the nozzles. Each valve element opening is provided a size and shape which interacts with a valve body outlet or aligned pairs of valve body outlets to vary the timing and volume of liquid delivered to one or more entry ports of a nozzle or an array of nozzles and thereby control the output and movement of a nozzle dispersal stream and its interaction with other nozzle dispersal streams.

Abstract: A method for providing a minimal splash waterfall that provides a unique arrangement where by the system reaches a steady state of draining and refilling in each bowl with a pleasant falling water sound and minimal splashing. The waterfall has a number of bowls of decreasing diameter mounted above one another. Abstract: A generator for cyclically moving jets comprises a housing including a chamber having a circular track therein, a body disposed in the chamber and rollable along the circular track, a hollow revolvable axle coupled to the body and extending to outside of the chamber and rotatably born in and sealed to the housing, a nozzle attached to the axle outside of the chamber for issuing at least one jet misalignedly in relation to the axis of rotation of the axle, and a fluid flow supply leading to an upstream region of the chamber. In operation, fluid flows past the body, through the hollow revolvable axle and issues from the nozzle as a jet. The body rolls along the circular track as a consequence of fluid-dynamic forces acting on the body. A fountain employs the generator for dynamic display of the cyclically moving jets issuing therefrom.

Abstract: The present invention is an apparatus for creating a "pop jet" type of ornamental fountain with an output stream in the form of surface-tension envelope or "ball" of fluid, embedded with air bubbles. By virtue of the laminar nature of the fluid created, the natural surface tension of the fluid prevents the envelope from flying apart into multiple fluid drops. The envelope therefore can be created much larger than has been possible previously. Previous attempts at building "pop jet" type fountains have been limited to creating relatively small envelopes due to the internal turbulence of the fluid. The present invention minimizes internal turbulence by utilizing various advances in envelope shape, outlet orifice design and diffuser strucutre. It enhances the size of the envelope produced by adding fluid and air bubbles outside the outlet orifice by directing the output stream sthrough a secondary pool of fluid.

Abstract: A lighted laminar-flow fluid nozzle is provided for use in decorative water fountains and industrial applications which defines fluid flow through a double-walled, bladder-like fluid supply hose, into a fluid chamber and through a diffuser, past trapped air pockets and exiting through a knife-edged outlet orifice. The fluid nozzle is mounted upon one or more stages of vibration dampening springs and the outlet orifice is located off center from the walls of the fluid chamber, all so that pump surges and vibrations are greatly dampened and the output fluid stream is sufficiently highly laminar so that light is conducted through the length of the output fluid stream in the manner of a fiber optic cable.

Abstract: Water displays utilizing laminar flow streams to create dynamic arch-like displays are disclosed. The laminar flow nozzle is mounted on an assembly for changing the angle and repositioning the laminar flow nozzle so that the laminar flow stream appears to eminate from a fixed location at different angles, which allows varying the characteristics of the display in a dynamic manner. Simultaneous control of the nozzle position and angle with control of the pressure of water supplied thereto allows the stream to be varied to create a dynamic display with the stream returning to a sink region at a fixed position independent of the height of the water stream. Illuminating the laminar flow stream internally causes the same to glow like a fluorescent tube with the color being supplied thereto, changeable as desired. Intersecting laminar flow streams provide interesting water formations, with the intersection of two streams of different colors causing still a third color at the flared region of the intersection. Features of the invention are useable independently, all in the same apparatus, or in various combinations as desired.

Abstract: Hydraulic jump water displays and methods for creating the same to provide attractive and varying displays are disclosed. In accordance with the method, water under pressure is expelled in the form of a thin sheet across a substantially flat, approximately horizontal surface bounded at the opposite end thereof by a very small dam, preferably water pool therebelow. By varying the water pressure of the source, a hydraulic jump may be created in the water backing up from the dam, which hydraulic jump may be caused to move in either direction, with the water flowing over the dam, ranging in quantity from essentially none to a substantially surge depending upon the direction or motion of the hydraulic jump. Appropriate control of the water supply pressure will generate relatively non-repetitive displays. Various embodiments are disclosed.

Abstract: Airpowered water displays for generating transient water displays which may have variable and high energy content are disclosed. In one form, a cylindrical chamber with a nozzle at one end thereof is disposed within a pool or lake so that the tip of the nozzle is substantially flush with the top of the water. Coupled to the lower part of the cylindrical chamber through a solenoid valve is a compressed air tank which, between firings, is filled with compressed air at a pressure selected in accordance with the height of the water display desired, with the pressure being varied between firings, such as by way of computer control. Opening of the solenoid valve couples the high pressure air to the bottom of the water column in the cylindrical chamber, forcing most of the water therein upward through the nozzle to heights which may reach one hundred fifty feet or more, dependent upon the pressure. Between firings, the cylindrical chamber is automatically refilled by the surrounding water. Various embodiments, including a lighted embodiment are disclosed.
