In a data display system, data codes are converted by character generators to dot matrix video waveforms for the display of alphanumeric characters and graphical characters (such as segments of graphs or maps), control codes being used to switch between alphanumeric and graphical display modes. In the latter mode, however, certain alphanumeric characters, such as the upper-case alphabet, can still be displayed under the control of a particular bit of the data codes. For one bit value the codes are interpreted as graphical characters. For the other bit value the codes are interpreted as alphanumeric characters.

Character codes of plural lines from an input-output circuit are entered into a refresh memory circulating at a clock frequency. One of these lines of character codes is then transferred to a shift register during a time period necessary for scanning a space between two adjacent lines. The shift register circulates at a rate higher by an integer number times the clock frequency and is equal to a horizontal scanning time of a standard television system. The integer number corresponds to the number of scanning lines existing in the space. A pattern generator is driven by the output signals of the shift register to convert such signals into video signals which produce one line of a character pattern on the cathode ray tube of the standard television system.

A method and apparatus for displaying information on the screen of a monitor which permits the simultaneous display of a first character and a second character in a single raster location on the screen of a monitor, and hence the overstriking or modifying of a first character with a second character in a single raster location on the monitor. In one form of the invention which involves a field sequential operation, a character generator will permit the alternate display of information from two separate memories in a single raster location by super-imposition of the characters in the raster location on the monitor. In another form of the present invention, involving line-sequential operation, a pair of character generators are employed and each operate in conjunction with each of a pair of memories and the characters thus generated in each character generator is combined in a mixer and displayed in the superimposed fashion on the screen of a monitor.

An electronic system for generating characters for television display by employing selected combinations of analogue waveforms. Ramp waveforms, usually of sawtooth form, are generated at line and field periods and are used to generate in turn triangular and parabolic waveforms. A memory contains data representing the shape of individual elements of characters for each quadrant of a display area and is actuated by a digital store. The memory serves to gate selected combinations of all the waveforms, together with blanking waveforms derived from the triangular waveforms, to synthesize a video character waveform. Means is provided for producing from the video character waveform a further video waveform, defining an area to outline the characters, which acts on a conventional video signal to hold the latter at the black level so that the video character waveform can be inserted thereon.

A decoding means is responsive to the time sequential bits and the code bits and generates keying control signals and video control signals that are suitable for controlling a scanned display to present contrasted images of characters to be displayed. In a preferred embodiment of the invention, the code bits are representative of the keying and video portions of the sequence of display events. The coding means produces signals that disable the generation of video signal during selected stroke portions, the code bits being determinative of which portions of the display event are to be disabled.

In response to receiving the instruction, the electronic device can increase the display size of the text and display the beginning of the text (e.g., the beginning of a sentence), even though an input may be detected in a region near the end of the text. In some cases, when the user instructs the device to increase the display size of text beyond a maximum level, the electronic device can provide an audio output corresponding to the text instead of or in addition to increasing the display size of the text.
