An improved ripper assembly (12) is joined to and drawn by a draft device (10) and includes a mounting structure (14), a ripper element (16), and an impactor apparatus (18). The mounting structure (14) includes an upper flange (20) and a lower flange (22) joined together by a pair of side plates (23). Aligned openings (24,26) in the flanges (20,22) permit attachment thereof to the draft device (10) and allows pivoting about a vertical pivot axis (28) when pins (30,32) are installed. The ripper element (16) is pivotable about a horizontal pivot axis (38) and is secured to the mounting structure (14) by a pivot pin (40). The impact apparatus (18) imparts intermittent blows to the ripper element (16) and is joined to the mounting structure (14) by a single upper support pin (44) and two, aligned lower support pins (46). The upper and lower support pins (44,46) are disposed adjacent the upper and lower flanges (20,22), respectively, while the pivot axis (38) extends through the side plates (23) intermediate the upper and lower flanges (20,22). The relative disposition of the component interconnections of the impact ripper assembly (12) and the independent nature of the connections permit separate removal of the ripper element (16) and/or the impactor apparatus (18).

A continuous miner includes a pair of resonant beams for driving a cutting blade rigidly secured to their lower anti-nodes. By mounting the beams so that they can pivot about both upper and lower nodes, the miner may be operated to make either vertical or horizontal cuts. When making vertical cuts, the beams are pivoted upward about their upper nodes to drive the blade in an upward arc in front of the miner, the blade being rearwardly off-set from the center line of the beams to reduce blade drag. To make horizontal cuts, the beams are maintained substantially vertically as the miner is driven forward. The precise angle of the blade relative to the ground may be adjusted to reduce blade drag by tilting the beams an appropriate amount about their lower nodes.

A conventional back hoe type earth moving machine is equipped with an earth fracturing ripper tooth mechanism attached to the back hoe boom and dipper so that it can not only be manipulated into working position as required but also stored out of the way, when the back hoe bucket is operated for conventional digging. Two hydraulic cylinders or rams are attached to the center pivot pin of the back hoe boom and dipper, for extending, retracting and manipulating the ripper tooth. Support for the rams is provided by a combination of the back hoe boom, the dipper and the bucket which are extended to form an "A" frame. The distal end of the "A" frame is supported by resting the back hoe bucket on the ground. The back hoe boom, dipper and bucket "A" frame, supported at each end, will resist, at the "A" frame apex, the reactive force required to move the ripper tooth into and upwardly through the material to be fractured. Additional and special ripper teeth attachments, to the earth fracturing mechanism, are provided for special digging conditions. Structure is also provided for shifting the tooth angularly in either lateral direction to enlarge the operating zone in which ripping and lifting is effected.

The control system is provided with a detector that detects whether the ripper is operated in a piercing operating mode or a digging operating mode. In the piercing operating mode the angle of the shank is adjusted to a preset piercing angle, while in the digging operating mode the shank angle is adjusted to a preset digging angle thereby effecting optimum piercing and digging operations. Limit switches for detecting upper and lower limit positions of the shank are provided for raising and lowering the shank between these limit positions while adjusting the shank angle. Further an overload detector is provided for raising the shank when its load exceeds a predetermined load and lowering the shank when the load decreases below it. A manual preference control device also provided for enabling manual control during automatic control.
