Novel 4-hydroxy coumarins substituted in the 3 position with substituted tetrahydronaphthyl groups are described. A method of making them by condensing 4-hydroxy coumarin with hydroxyl or halogeno derivatives of the substituted tetrahydronaphthalenes is described. The compounds of the invention are potent anticoagulants finding typical uses as rodenticides. As rodenticides they are particularly effective against rodents resistant to such agents as Warfarin, Coumatetralyl, Diphacinone and Pival.

Ketones are prepared with a high yield and a prolonged catalyst life, by reacting an aldehyde selected from the group consisting of straight chain or branched chain aliphatic aldehydes having a carbon number of 4-10 (inclusive) and aromatic aldehydes represented by the general formula of ##SPC1##Wherein n is 0-5 with a monocarboxylic acid selected from the group consisting of acetic acid and propionic acid, at a temperature of 200.degree.-600.degree.C, in the presence of a catalyst of zirconium oxide alone or a mixture of zirconium oxide and at least one kind of the metal oxide selected from the group consisting of alkali metal oxides and alkaline earth metal oxides.

A fluidized bed reactor, vertically divided into two or more upper compartments or chambers which are connected to each other by a lower mixing chamber, provides a fluidized bed system wherein the fluidized catalyst can be used in one of the upper chambers and then by random movement pass into the lower mixing chamber hence into another upper chamber where it can be regenerated. This compact system requires a minimum of equipment and gives a maximum of operating efficiency.
