New triazine compositions having incorporated therewithin both alkanolamino groups and pendent tertiary amino groups are defined herein. The triazines are prepared by the reaction of (1) an intermediate prepared from either alkyl chlorides or alkylene oxides and dialkylaminoalkyl primary amines and (2) cyanuric chloride or a derivative thereof. The triazines hereof exhibit excellent catalytic activity in the preparation of rigid cellular foams characterized by carbodiimide linkages.

Cyanuric halide is successively reacted with two moles of carboxy substituted aromatic amine and one mole of quaternizing agent such as pyridine and dissolved, e.g., in dilute ammonium hydroxide. At certain concentrations as the solution evaporates, it becomes nematic. The solution is evaporated on an oriented substrate so that the residue is anisotropic and is finally frozen in a resinous form which shows birefringence. The substrate and coating is valuable as a fractional wave plate.

A novel process for preparing s-triazinyl-mono- and -diisocyanates is disclosed which comprises reacting s-triazinylmono- or -diamines with phosgene in certain organic solvents, such as nitrobenzene, and, optionally, in the presence of a catalyst. By said process high yields of s-triazinyl-mono- and di-isocyanates can be obtained in a simple and economical manner.
