The present invention relates to a process for recovering and recycling the organic binder components accumulating as overspray during the spraying of a solvent-containing, two-component polyurethane lacquer or a solvent-containing, moisture-curing, one-component polyurethane lacquer byi) washing the overspray out of the exhaust air of a coating plant with the aid of an aqueous medium which a) contains in dissolved or dispersed form compounds that exhibit greater reactivity towards isocyanate groups than either water or the isocyanate-reactive groups present in two-component polyurethane lacquers, and b) may contain emulsifiers,ii) isolating the chemically modified overspray formed in step (i) in the form of lacquer sludge by treatment with coagulating agents, which may be present in the aqueous medium,iii) mixing the lacquer sludge, containing fully reacted lacquer constituents, coagulating agents and water, optionally after a portion of the water is removed, with an organic solvent andiv) separating the organic phase accumulating in step iii) from the aqueous phase and insoluble-constituents which may be present and recovering the solution of modified organic binder components dissolved in the organic phase.

The invention relates to water blown integral skin polyurethane foams made with a particular isocyanate quasi-prepolymer and resin side ingredients to yield a foam having good overall mechanical roperties. The isocyanate quasi-prepolymer component of the present invention comprises from 0.5 weight percent to 30.0 weight percent or less uretonimine-carbodiimide-modified diphenylmethane diisocyanate, from 50 weight percent to 80 weight percent 4,4'-diphenylmethane diisocyanate and reacted with from 15 weight percent to 40 weight percent of a polyether polyol containing predominately secondary hydroxy groups and having an average molecular weight from about 2,000 to 10,000, an average functionality from 1.5 to about 3.2, and a hydroxyl number from about 20 to 60. The resin side component comprises a high molecular weight polyether polyol with an average functionality from 1.5 to about 3.2, water as a blow agent, and optionally an mono- or di-functional alcohol composition having from 8 to about 30 carbon atoms. The components, when injected or poured into a preheated mold, can tolerate mold temperatures from 105.degree. F. to 135.degree. F. and can be demolded in less than 150 seconds to yield and integral skin foam having little or no bubbles or pores visible to the eye. The foam produced thereby has a compression set of 30 percent or less, high tensile strength, and high tear strength.

A halogen-free blowing agent is used to produce isocyanate-based polymeric foams. The blowing agent is an organic liquid which is free from halogens and contains a positive binary azeotrope having a minimum boiling temperature in the range of about 15.degree. C. to about 80.degree. C. at normal atmospheric pressure. Particularly preferred is a binary azeotrope of an alicyclic hydrocarbon such as cyclopentane or cyclohexane and methyl formate.The halogen-free blowing agents contemplated herein provide the following advantages: no ozone depletion potential, no global warming potential, direct replacement in foam formulations for trichloromonofluoromethane (CFC-11), relatively higher blowing action, relatively lower foam density, relatively lower thermal conductivity, better compatibility, and relatively lower materials cost.

The invention relates to rigid integral skin polyurethane structural foam having high impact strength, high heat distortion, and flame retardant properties. The foam is prepared from triisopropanolamine-initiated polyoxyalkylene (TIPA) polyether polyols oxyalkylated with a compound producing primary hydroxyl functional termination. The polyether polyol is advantageously of a molecular weight sufficient to enable TIPA to flow well while retaining its flame retardant characteristics in the foam.

A water-blown polyurethane foam is provided between two substrates in foamed-in-place applications such as cooling containers. The water-blown polyurethane foam is made dimensionally stable at low densities by adding lithium salts of a 2 to 24 carbon atom carboxylic acid to the polyol component. The dimensional stability of the foam at the low densities further results in raw material savings.
