A test coupon package suitable for a cathodic protection system includes a native test coupon and first and second active coupons. The active coupons may be biased with respect to the soil or other electrolytic medium in which a pipeline protected by the system resides. The first active coupon may have a surface area that will contact an electrolytic medium that is approximately equal to a surface area of the native test coupon that will contact the electrolytic medium. The surface area of the first active coupon may be substantially greater than a surface area of the second active coupon that will contact the electrolytic medium. The test coupon package may include an electrochemically stable reference electrode positioned between the first active coupon and the native coupon. The test coupon package may be substantially cylindrical and, in at least one embodiment, may include a conical nose connected to a first end of the test coupon package with the second active coupon attached to a narrow end of the conical nose.

The coating monitoring system is based on electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). The system consists of one or more compact and rugged mini-potentiostat modules coupled to one or more electrodes mounted on top of the paint coating of the structure being monitored. The electrodes and modules can be coated with a topcoat if desired. Alternatively, they may be mounted only temporarily to the structure for spot inspection. They periodically report to a laptop. Communications may be implemented using a wireless protocol. The units may be battery powered with an estimated battery lifetime of up to ten years, depending on the frequency of measurement and interrogation Alternative power supplies may be used to replace or supplement the battery to allow extended battery lifetime. Moisture, humidity, or other sensors may be incorporated into the coating monitor.

An object of the present invention is to provide a corrosive environment monitoring apparatus and a corrosive environment monitoring method for evaluating the corrosiveness of an ambient environment simply and accurately in a short time period. The corrosive environment monitoring apparatus (1) of this invention has at least one vent duct (3a, 3b, 3c) in which specimens (2a, 2b, 2c) are installed so that the corrosiveness of the ambient environment is measured from the corroded conditions of the specimens (2a, 2b, 2c). The regions of the specimens (2a, 2b, 2c) in one vent duct (3a, 3b, 3c), which are subject to measurement, are made of the same metallic material. If a plurality of vent ducts (3a, 3b, 3c) are provided, these vent ducts (3a, 3b, 3c) are arranged in parallel with one another.

A measuring and assessing method for the AC corrosion risk of a pipeline wherein the coupon is connected to a metallic pipeline buried in the earth and the AC corrosion risk of the pipeline is assessed on the basis of coupon DC current density and coupon AC current density that are acquired from a measured value of a coupon current, wherein the measuring and assessing method includes: a step of specifying frequency to specify a source of AC corrosion from a waveform of the measured value of the coupon current; and a step of calculating a coupon current density whereby a pair of coupon DC current density and coupon AC current density is acquired from the measured value of the coupon current in one time unit by defining one cycle of a specified frequency as one time unit.

A measurement system permits environmental, corrosion damage, and mechanical property measurements to assess protection properties of coatings. The system includes one or more multi-sensor panels, each multi-sensor panel having sensors for assessing coating barrier properties, free corrosion, and galvanic corrosion. Each multi-sensor panel is installed on a test rack that contains electronics for sensor excitation and sensor data acquisition throughout a corrosion test. Sensor data is collected, stored, and communicated to a base station. A network of multiple test racks can be supported by a base station to compare the performance of different coatings and material combinations simultaneously. The test racks can be used in accelerated atmospheric corrosion tests, outdoor test sites, or application service environments. Measurements of the capacity of a coating to maintain barrier properties, prevent free corrosion, galvanic corrosion, and environment-assisted cracking can be used to develop, select, and predict service performance of coatings.

A sensor device and method for monitoring interaction between a fluid and a wall includes includes a mechanical oscillator, a housing, and mechanical response sensing system. The mechanical oscillator includes a floating member formed from a first material configured to be susceptible to the fluid and a support member formed from a second material resistant to the fluid. The mechanical oscillator is affixed within the housing that is adaptably fastened to the structural component such that the floating member contacts the fluid. The mechanical response sensing system is configured to measure a mechanical characteristic of the combined floating member and the support member. The mechanical characteristic is configured to be indicative of the interaction between the fluid and the wall.
