摘要: An air preheater has heat transfer elements with a first series of corrugated elements having longitudinally oriented, mutually parallel corrugations formed generally continuously across the lateral direction. Positioned on either side of each of the corrugated elements of the first series are a series of notched plates each having mutually parallel spaced apart notches. Each notch is formed by parallel double ridges projecting transversely from opposite sides and the element has flat sections between the notches. The notches are oriented obliquely in mutually opposite directions relative to the corrugations of the adjacent elements whereby the notched elements are in contact with the corrugated elements solely at the points of intersection of the notches and corrugations. This produces an increased number of boundary layer breaks and improves heat transfer as well as providing straight line passages through the elements.

摘要: A rotary regenerative air preheater has a heat exchange basket assembly comprising one keystone heat exchange basket disposed between two lateral heat exchange baskets in each outboard sector compartment. The baskets have a trapezoidal shape such that the parallel sides of the keystone heat exchange basket and each lateral basket define the inboard and outboard faces of each basket. Heat exchange elements are loaded into the baskets such that they extend parallel to the parallel sides of each basket. Since the baskets have a trapezoidal shape, the width of the elements in the keystone heat exchange basket and the lateral heat exchange baskets are progressively reduced from the outboard face to the inboard face.

摘要: An arrangement is provided in an air preheater for mounting and adjusting the axial seal plates in relation to the rotor using a reduced number of adjustable mountings and replacing the remaining adjustable mountings with adjustable compression stops. These adjustable compression stops engage but require no attachment to the axial seal plates. This reduces the work necessary in the limited space between the air preheater housing and the axial seal plates thereby reducing costs and facilitating installation and replacement.

摘要: A system and method for detecting hot spots in a rotary regenerative air preheater which compensates for normal variations in the temperature of the incoming hot gas stream or incoming cold air stream. Alarm conditions are based on calculations relating to the average and maximum outlet gas or outlet air over a period of time compared to the air and gas inlet temperature. The alarm is triggered if the maximum values deviate from the time averaged values more than a selected percentage.

摘要: A catalytic regenerative oxidizer (18) comprises a closed casing (24) having upper and lower ends, an input port (20) at the lower end and an output port (22) at the upper end. The casing contains a plurality of stacked layers or beds, including upper (34), lower (32), and central beds (40) of silica gravel or the like. Two catalyst layers (36, 38) are provided in the stack, one between the lower and central gravel beds, and the other between the upper and central gravel beds. A heating element (42) is situated in the central bed, for maintaining at least one of the catalyst layers at an activation temperature in the range of about 500-1000 deg.F. The catalyst layers are formed by a multiplicity of ceramic pellets on which is deposited a catalyst material, such as precious metal. The contaminated gas stream enters the casing through the lower port and passes vertically through the stacked beds and layers. Oxidation of the organic compounds occurs in the catalyst layers, such that clean air is discharged through the outlet port.

摘要: A hot spot detection system (78) at one location that is fixed with respect to the rotor (12), and a temperature suppression system (62) at another location that is fixed with respect to the rotor. The suppression system is automatically energized by the hot spot detection system when a threshold temperature is detected. Preferably, the suppression system includes one or more pipes (66) that span the radial dimension of the heating element compartments in the rotor. The detection system can be in the conventional location, on the trailing edge (40) of the air inlet duct (32) of the air preheater. The suppression piping (66) is preferably located in the hot end, or air discharge duct (34), of the air preheater. Depending on the location of the suppression piping with respect to rotor rotation, a timing device (100) is preferably employed to start and stop the flow of suppression water into the rotor, just prior to and after the hot spot passes under the piping.

摘要: A heat transfer element assembly (30) is comprised of a plurality of first and second profiled heat transfer plates (32,34) which incorporate a series of first and second single-lobed outwardly protruding notches (40,50) which extend obliquely relative to the general direction of fluid flow through the assembled plates. The first and second profiled heat transfer plates (32,34) are assembled alternately in juxtaposed relationship in a stacked array with the obliquely extending spacing notches (40,50) of neighboring plates crossing each other. The first and second profiled head transfer plates are provided with a plurality of first single-lobed notches (40) protruding outwardly from one side of the plate and a plurality of second single-lobed notches (50) protruding outwardly from the other side of the plate. The first and second single-lobed notches are arranged in staggered relationship with one or more second single-lobed notches (50) disposed between each pair of first single-lobed notches (40).

摘要: A rotary regenerative heat exchanger is particularly adapted for use in exchanging heat from a hot gas entering the heat exchanger at a temperature in the range of 2000.degree.-3000.degree. F. to low temperature air to be heated. An upper rotor and a lower rotor are supported concentrically about a rotor post mounted for rotation successively through the hot gas and air flows at a vertical axis. The hot gas enters and the heated air exits through the top of the heat exchanger, while the cooled gas exits and the cold air to be heated enters through the bottom of the heat exchanger. The upper rotor houses ceramic heat absorbent blocks adapted to withstand the high temperatures existing in the upper portion of the heat exchanger, while the low rotor houses typical metallic element suitable for use at more moderate temperatures.

摘要: A rotary regenerative heat exchanger 10 having a rotor 12 mounted to a central rotor post 18 for rotation within a surrounding housing 20 whereby heat absorbent material carried in the rotor is alternately exposed to a flow of heating gas and a gas to be heated. A radial seal assembly 50 including a flexible sealing strip 72 is mounted to the hot end edge of each radially extending partition 16 of the rotor 12 to establish a seal across the gap between the radially extending partitions 16 and the confronting face of the sector plate 24 of the housing 20 as the rotor is rotated. Each radial seal assembly 50 is provided with a back support leaf 64 having an outward portion 68 which provides a backstop to limit the backward bending of the flexible sealing strip 72 so as to preclude stressing of the sealing strip beyond its yield point.
