An expansion shield for anchoring a machine screw or bolt in a hole in masonry, concrete or stone comprises a strip-like blank of sheet helically wound around a shaft. One turn of the shield overlaps a previous turn. The blank in one end has an inwardly bent engagement portion. A method of producing such an expansion shield comprises winding with overlap a strip-like blank of sheet to helical shape on a rotatable and axially displaceable winding shaft which forms an acute angle with the feeding direction of the blank. A tool or an apparatus for producing the shield is also disclosed.

A fixture for anchoring a machine screw in a hole in brickwork, concrete or stone comprises a socket which can be inserted into the hole, the diameter of which is not more than 1.1 times larger than the diameter of the screw. The thickness of the socket is between 3 and 7 % of the diameter of the screw and the material of the socket is selected from those being highly ductile when stressed beyond its yield point. The material of the socket will then after undergoing plastic deformation when the screw is tightened, fill at least one-half of the volume between the screw thread and the walls of the hole. The material of the sockets may consist of a metal or plastic material of deepdrawing quality, such as steel, brass, a tombac alloy or Delrin (polyoxymethylene).

The thermometer of the invention is characterized by a substance, preferably a salt, the solubility of which changes with temperature and which is present in a solid or liquid phase in the temperature range in which the thermometer is intended to be used, said substance being extended in a space such as a column or the like one end of which space is arranged to be brought into contact with a specified quantity of a liquid solvent for said substance. Measurement of temperature is performed by observing how much of the substance will be dissolved before saturation of the liquid solvent.
