Abstract: Methods of forming an ophthalmic element via generating a map of data values associated with pixels included in an energy transmissibility pattern. Data values correspond with an amount of energy transmissible through the optical element at a pixel location. The data values may be converted to additive manufacturing printhead control commands. A first print pattern of polymerizable mixture is emitted as droplets from a manufacturing printhead. The first print pattern of polymerizable mixture corresponding with the map of data values associated with pixels included in an energy transmissibility pattern. At least a portion of the droplets are received on a receiving surface.

Abstract: A multifocal ophthalmic lens with multiple sub-optical elements along a same optical path and methods for generating the multifocal ophthalmic lens. The method includes intermittent pinning of deposited polymerizable mixture and final cure of the deposited polymerizable mixture. The intermittent pinning may form a sub-optical element. A pattern of multiple defined areas may be manufactured, with each area representing an amount of energy transmissibility associated with that area. Each area may have a light value based upon a scale, such as an 8 bit, 16 bit, 32 bit, 64 bit scale or other scale. In some embodiments, each area may refer to a smallest single component of a digital image.

Abstract: Improved methods and apparatus for holding a polymeric optical lens, such as an ophthalmic lens (contact lens or intraocular lens “IOL”); or other polymeric item; in a hydrated state in a hydrated lens inspection container (“HLIC”) that is conducive for measurement of characteristics of the ophthalmic lens (or other polymeric item) being inspected. According to the present invention, a HLIC receives the polymeric optical lens into a HLIC lens retention cavity, and a hydration fluid fills the HLIC to a level above a cavity upper edge of the HLIC container, hydration fluid is permitted to reach a level above the cavity upper edge via formation of a meniscus with the hydration liquid.

Abstract: Methods for additive manufacture of an article corresponding with one or more arrays of data values. The article may include, for example, an optical lens, such as a contact lens or an intraocular lens. The methods include generating an array of data values and emitting droplets of polymerizable mixture in a pattern corresponding with the arrays of data values. After receiving the droplets of polymerizable mixture on a receiving surface, the droplets are integrated and pinned via exposure to actinic conditions. Two or more patterns of droplets may be combined on the receiving surface to form a combined volume of polymerizable mixture and cured.

Abstract: Electroactive dynamic lenses that have more than one degree of visual accommodation that supplements an accommodation provided by a human eye on which the electroactive dynamic lens is worn. The accommodation is provided via activation of a shape memory alloy structure through a transition. A desired change in a focal plane may be accomplished with structures that may be electroactively controlled to expand or contract during a transition of the shape memory alloy. In some embodiments, a ring containing one or more elements that expand or contract under the influence of an electrical current to modify an overall shape of a formable ophthalmic lens and accomplish visual accommodation.
