Abstract: An augmented reality device includes an eyeglass frame and a combiner mounted on the eyeglass frame. The combiner includes an inner surface and an outer surface disposed opposite the inner surface. The device further includes an active shutter lens mounted on the combiner and an image projector mounted on the eyeglass frame and configured to project display light to the combiner such that a first portion of the display light is emitted from the inner surface of the combiner and a second portion of the display light is emitted from the outer surface of the combiner. The device additionally includes a processor coupled to the image projector and the active shutter lens. The active shutter lens is configured to shield the display light emitted from the outer surface of the combiner. The combiner is configured to emit ambient light from the inner surface thereof.

Abstract: An electronic loupe (400) features a view piece (401) mounted to a headpiece (405) by a linkage (406). A camera (402) and LED light (403) are mounted (404) in front of the view piece (401) to provide an image in the view piece (401) on displays (not shown) for the user. A control box (410) may be wired to the electronic loupe, or wirelessly connected, or the controls for the electronic loupe may reside on the view piece (401) and the headpiece (405). Other controls, such as a remote control or a foot pedal, are also disclosed. Illumination controls and location are designed for ideal illumination along various spectra. Automatic recording and documentation is also provided.

Abstract: Methods and apparatus are provided for adaptively focusing a lens. In one approach, electromagnetic energy is employed to modify a shape or thickness of a lens such that its refractive power and focal length are modified. In one aspect, a lens embodying adaptive focus features requires low power, and can be adjusted quickly. One or a plurality of electromagnets can be employed to compress or separate end portions of an embedded haptic, the force from which acts to alter the shape of the haptic, thus modifying the refractive power and focal length of a lens.

Abstract: This disclosure describes, in part, eyeglass systems configured to automatically adjust an optical-power value, or optical power, of lenses of the eyeglass system based on the distance between eyes of a user wearing the eyeglass system and an object that the user is looking at. In some instances, the eyeglass system may determine a degree-of-convergence (DoC) or convergence angle between the left eye and the right eye of the user to determine the distance between the eyes of the user and the object the user is viewing. Further, the eyeglass system may include a power source and lenses that change their optical-power value based on different voltage or current values provided to the lenses by the power source.

Abstract: A system/method allowing personalized ex vivo customization of a generic ophthalmic lens blank (OLB) or ophthalmic lens with known diopter (OKD) based on localized field-measured patient characteristics is disclosed. The OLB is composed of an acrylic material that has been infused with an ultraviolet (UV) absorbing compound rendering it amenable to customized spatial modification (CSM) of its refractive index via the use of pulsed laser radiation (PLR). The CSM of refractive index eliminates the need for remote laboratory fabrication of a customized intraocular lens (IOL) for the patient. The OLB is retained within a secured lens container (SLC) providing for precise physical orientation of the OLB haptics and OLB lens structure with respect to the application of PLR to the OLB. The SLC contains a lens filler material (LFM) covering the OLB and is hermetically sealed after the OLB has been positioned within the SLC interior and prior to sterilization of the SLC+OLB combination.

Abstract: Methods of making optical films and optical stacks are described. A method of making an optical stack includes providing a thermoform tool centered on a tool axis and having an external surface rotationally asymmetric about the tool axis; heating an optical film resulting in a softened optical film; conforming the softened optical film to the external surface while stretching the softened film along at least orthogonal first and second directions away from the tool axis resulting in a conformed optical film rotationally asymmetric about an optical axis of the conformed film where the optical axis coincident with the tool axis; cooling the conformed optical film resulting in a symmetric optical film rotationally symmetric about the optical axis; and molding an optical lens on the symmetric optical film resulting in the optical stack.

Abstract: Integral optical stacks and optical systems including the integral optical stack are described. The integral optical stack may include first and second lenses, a partial reflector, a reflective polarizer curved about two orthogonal axes, and a quarter wave retarder. The reflective polarizer is curved about two orthogonal axes and includes at least one layer that is substantially optically biaxial at at least one first location on the at least one layer away from an optical axis of the optical stack and substantially optically uniaxial at at least one second location away from the optical axis.
